How to Become NSF Certified

Example Testing Process

(Note: special testing programs may have additional steps).

Application

Please click here if you would like to fill out an online application or speak with NSF's New Client Services. Once your application is received, NSF will assign a program representative to your company. Your program representative will be your primary contact with NSF and will handle all of your needs and questions, overseeing your testing needs every step of the way. After submitting your application, expect your program representative to contact you within 48 hours to begin the testing process for your product(s).

Product Information

In order to properly facilitate your testing services, your program representative will assist you in filling out NSF's Product Information Form. This from only needs to be completed once per product submitted for testing. NSF will retain this form to reference for any future tests. This process assists our clients by removing duplicative information submittal. The information provided will also aid in determining exactly what testing will be needed for the product. Of course, your representative will be available if you have any question.

A Note About Confidential Business Information (Recipes, Ingredients, Processes): NSF is aware that the information submitted on this form can include confidential business information that is considered proprietary to NSF's clients. While this information is necessary in order to provide a complete picture of the product submitted for testing, NSF has strict measures in place to handle this confidential information. Please ask your program representative for a copy of NSF's non-disclosure agreement.

Initiate Testing

After you have completed the Product Information Form with your program representative, testing can be initiated at any time. Typically, there are two types of sample submittal:

  • Auditor Collected Samples: Some clients choose to have GMO testing performed as part of a more comprehensive risk-management program. In this instance, an NSF auditor may collect samples from a facility during a GMP, Sensitive Ingredient, or Sanitation audit in order to verify that the product meets the company's quality guidelines.
  • Client Submitted Samples: Other clients choose to submit samples to NSF directly. These cases may be in order to include a test report with a shipment to a foreign nation, to ensure supplier compliance with a purchase agreement, test report submittal for organic certification, or for farm operators to test crop loads before processing. A toll-free phone call to your program representative at 1-800-NSF-MARK (800-673-6275) is all it takes to initiate the process.

Test Report

Depending on the turn-time selected for product testing, a test report will be available within 1-5 business days. NSF is able to supply test reports to clients via email, fax, and U.S. mail. NSF test reports are clear, and indicate exactly what the testing covered for the client. All test reports are stored electronically at NSF as well as supplied to the client in the preferred method(s).

Monitoring Program

NSF offers continuing monitoring testing for clients to check product consistency over a period of time. Since all pertinent product information is kept on file at NSF, conducting monitoring testing can be set up to take place automatically, or can be initiated at any time by contacting your program representative.
