NSF/ANSI Standard 49

NSF/ANSI Standard 49 Biosafety Cabinetry: Design, Construction, Performance, and Field Certification applies to Class II biological safety cabinets only, as designed to minimize the hazards inherent in working with agents assigned to biosafety levels 1, 2, or 3. The standard defines the tests with which a cabinet must comply to become NSF Certified.

The standard includes basic requirements for materials, design and construction, and performance that are intended to provide personnel, product and environmental protection, reliable operation, durability, cleanability, noise level and illumination control, vibration control, and electrical safety.

In addition, the standard includes detailed test procedures and informational annexes, including recommendations for installation, field certification tests, and decontamination procedures. Annex F describes the field tests for which individuals must demonstrate competency to become NSF Accredited.
