Dietary Supplements: The Direction of Training and Consulting for 2013

By Lindsay Bartlein, Certification Project Manager, NSF International

As of June 2010, companies involved in the manufacturing, packaging, distribution or warehousing of dietary supplements in the United States have to be compliant with the FDA’s 21 CFR 111 regulation. This stemmed from DSHEA (the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act) which was passed in 1994 and states that the manufacturer is responsible for ensuring that its products meet specifications for composition, purity, strength and identity.

Now in 2012, the dietary supplements industry is still far from fully regulated. From Dateline NBC's March 2012 exposé of an alleged "dry lab" to the more recent scrutiny of energy drinks, media headlines with accusations against the industry have left the public calling for safer supplements.

This has in turn led to lawmakers and the FDA pushing for more stringent regulation of the dietary supplements industry, making it more important than ever to focus on good manufacturing practice (GMP) regulations.

NSF’s Dietary Supplements Program offers to be your go-to resource for GMP compliance in 2013.

In addition to offering NSF GMP registration, product certification and Certified for Sport®, NSF Dietary Supplements will conduct several training courses throughout 2013, focusing primarily on compliance with the FDA’s 21 CFR 111 regulation on dietary supplement GMPs.

It is our goal to provide dietary supplement industry professionals with the skills and knowledge necessary to function in accordance with these regulations. In 2013, we will be offering Dietary Supplement Quality Training (DSQT) courses at major industry trade shows and in dietary supplement industry hotspots such as California, New York, New Jersey, Salt Lake City and Florida.
