Council provides public and environmental health expertise
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (October 26, 2011) – The NSF International Council of Public Health Consultants, which evaluates and approves NSF public health and environmental health standards, recently elected four new members: Kevin Besey, France Lemieux, Paul Olson and Thomas Vyles.
The new members bring with them extensive expertise in recreational water, wastewater, food safety and drinking water, which supports NSF International’s mission to protect and improve human health.
Kevin Besey, RS, MPA, DAAS, is Director of the Food & Dairy Division of the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development where he manages the state-wide food and dairy safety programs. Besey has worked in the food safety industry since 1977 and currently serves as a member of the Association of Food and Drug Officials. He is a Diplomate of the American Academy of Sanitarians and has been a Michigan Registered Sanitarian (RS) since 1982. Besey has a master’s degree in public administration from Western Michigan University with additional expertise in industrial hygiene, asbestos, hazardous waste, indoor air quality and bio-hazards.
France Lemieux, MCE, works with Health Canada, currently serving as Head of the Materials and Treatment Section of the Water, Air and Climate Change Bureau. She manages a team of scientists and engineers who develop the analytical methods and treatment criteria for the Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality. Lemieux has experience in toxicology and drinking water treatment and participates on a number of standards committees relating to materials in contact with drinking water and plumbing products. She co-published “Challenges in Addressing Variability of Lead in Domestic Plumbing, Water Science and Technology: Water Supply” in 2010. She is a member of both the American Water Works Association and the International Water Association and has 23+ years of public health experience. Lemieux earned a master’s degree in civil engineering (water resources) from Norwich University and a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Queen’s University.
Paul Olson, PE, is Senior Manager of Standards for the American Water Works Association (AWWA) and oversees the AWWA Standards Program, which consists of more than 160 standards and 16 manuals covering water treatment and supply. He has 17 years of experience in public health-related positions and brings particular expertise to the water and wastewater industries. Olson is a registered Professional Engineer for the State of Colorado and has completed standards and leadership training from the American National Standards Institute. Olson received his mechanical engineering degree from the University of Arizona.
Thomas Vyles, MA, is a Senior Health Specialist for the City of Plano Health Department where he oversees codes and standards development for recreational water. Vyles brings 12 years of experience to the industry and previously worked as a chemist for Safety-Kleen, a leading provider of environmental services, oil re-refining and responsible cleaning solutions. He joined the American Academy of Sanitarians in 2011 and serves on the governing council of the Texas Environmental Health Association. Vyles earned a master's degree in organizational management and a bachelor's degree in biology.
Combined, all 35 members of the NSF Council of Public Health Consultants have over 1,380 years of public health experience.
