Thomas J. Bruursema, M.S. - General Manager, Sustainability, NSF International
Tom Bruursema is a sustainability expert with more than 24 years of experience in product certification and professional accreditation within domestic and international markets. Bruursema currently serves as General Manager of NSF International’s Sustainability division, which helps companies develop standardized, objective methods of measuring sustainability that instill marketplace confidence and promote acceptance of more sustainable products and services. These services include standards development, product assurance and certification, advisory services and quality systems management to help companies green their products, operations, systems and supply chains.
Bruursema has worked in several other leading positions within NSF including General Manager for the Drinking Water Treatment Units division, Environmental Research Services, Program Manager for Biosafety Cabinetry and Laboratory Accreditation and Senior Microbiologist.
Bruursema received an honorary membership award from the Water Quality Association (WQA) in 2003 and has contributed to several technical publications including the Journal of Food Safety and Water Conditioning & Purification. He is a former Board Member of the National Onsite Wastewater Recycling Association, a WQA Honorary Member, and serves as Chair of the WQA International Standards and Regulations Task Force.
He received his master’s degree in biology and bachelor’s degree in medical technology from Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
