Pipe Certification for Gas Distribution Applications

Third party certification of gas piping and distribution systems provides utility engineers, regulators, manufacturers and communities the assurance that products are independently certified to meet the demands of gas applications. NSF testing and certification of these products can reduce liability, increase confidence and product acceptance, and helps ensure product consistency in meeting all applicable requirements. To see a complete list of NSF-certified gas distribution products, or search by manufacturer, visit the online listings page.

While relatively new to the gas distribution market, NSF has been doing materials and performance testing on plastic pipe and components for over 40 years. In fact, NSF/ANSI Standard 14 for health effects safety and performance of plastics, is well-known and respected by the plastics industry, manufacturers and public health officials around the globe.

Now NSF is applying its expertise from the water industry to the gas distribution industry, providing product testing and certification of plastic piping, materials, fittings, valves and related gas distribution components to industry safety and performance standards. Then NSF takes it one step further with auditing and ongoing monitoring to provide even more peace of mind in gas distribution products certified by NSF.

Three-Part Program

To provide the utmost confidence to gas utilities, code/regulatory officials, manufacturers and consumers, NSF International created a comprehensive three-part program to ensure the quality and safety of plastic gas distribution piping system components.

  1. Product Testing - NSF offers unparalleled third-party testing and certification to the most common gas application standards: ASTM D2513, CSA B137.4 and ASME B16.40, while demonstrating ongoing compliance with US CFR Title 49 Part 192: Transportation of Natural and other Gas by Pipeline; Minimum Safety Standards.
  2. Material Testing and Evaluation - As part of NSF's certification program for gas materials are also tested to meet requirements for:
    • Hydrostatic Design Stress in accordance with Plastics Pipe Institute (PPI) TR-3.
    • Material Properties test according to applicable material standards such as ASTM D3350.
    • Rapid Crack Propagation (RCP) in accordance with ISO 13477 or ISO 134780.
  3. Annual Monitoring - NSF employs a rigorous monitoring policy to ensure quality manufacturing and consistency though facility inspections and product testing:

Facility Inspections - Three unannounced audits every year, which include:

Using the NSF Mark

After products successfully complete required testing and auditing, they are then authorized to bear the respected "NSF-gas" certification mark, as shown here.
