Frequently Asked Questions

What is the EU RoHS directive? Who does it affect?

RoHS is the acronym for Restriction of Hazardous Substances. The RoHS regulations are relevant to manufacturers selling a wide range of electrical and electronic products into the European Union. It restricts the use of six hazardous materials (lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, PBBs or PBDEs), thereby protecting human health and the environment.

All applicable products sold in the EU market after July 1, 2006 must be EU RoHS compliant. Visit our links page for more information on EU RoHS compliance.

What's involved in the evaluation process?

To be EU RoHS compliant, manufacturers must demonstrate that their product either (1) does not contain any of the six hazardous materials; or (2) contains less than the permitted levels of such materials.

My products are already certified by NSF. What do I need to do to show that my products are also EU RoHS compliant?

If your products have already been certified by NSF, we most likely have the necessary information on file to verify compliance. This evaluation would require that all formulations for the product be on file with NSF.

Other organizations have contacted me wanting to evaluate my products for EU RoHS compliance. Why should I use NSF?

For NSF clients, achieving this compliance is a natural extension of our certification services. The compliance process is quick and simple, given that we already have your product information on file.

However, even if you are not already an NSF client, NSF is still the right choice. NSF is a not-for-profit organization whose sole focus is protecting public health. All of our standards, testing and certification services revolve around public health safety, material safety and health effects testing. NSF is known and respected worldwide for its unbiased, thorough and accurate formulation review and testing. Because of this reputation, a EU RoHS Compliance certificate issued by NSF will fully satisfy your needs.

How long does NSF's EU RoHS compliance testing/evaluation process take?

Timing for EU RoHS compliance verification will vary greatly, depending on whether or not you are an existing NSF client, as well as how many individual parts comprise your product. As a general rule, however, compliance verification can be done in as little as 4-6 weeks.

How much does NSF charge to do EU RoHS compliance testing and evaluations?

This is difficult to pinpoint without knowing some basic information first. To get a realistic idea of costs involved for this compliance, please complete our EU RoHS Estimate Questionnaire and you will receive prompt information back based upon your unique needs.

Following NSF's EU RoHS evaluation, what will I receive as proof that my product is EU RoHS compliant?

NSF will issue a letter of compliance, stating the specific model or trade name of the products included under the scope of the evaluation.
