One of the first residential appliance testing standards that was developed was NSF/ANSI Standard 184 - Residential Dishwashers. This American national standard was created to help ensure that residential dishwashers can effectively clean and sanitize dishes in order to assist in preventing foodborne illness. Products certified to this standard are verified to achieve a 5-log or 99.999 percent reduction of bacteria when operated on the sanitizing cycle.
