Regardless of one’s role at NSF, what you do every day makes a difference in terms of protecting public health and safety. And while you are making a difference, you also are challenged strategically to find better ways to do things and grow yourself and the organization.
The marketing and communications skill set I use every day was developed in the Navy via Defense Department training programs, graduate-level education funded by the Navy and old fashioned on-the-job training. The Navy also provided management and leadership training that isn’t often taught in the civilian world. On a day-to-day basis, military members are given a lot of responsibility for leading people and programs. You learn how to get things done leading many types of people and personalities, how to manage your time and how to cope with stress and how to “just roll with it”.
