Did you know that one in four households in the U.S. has an onsite septic system to treat household wastewater? Since many of these households also have a private well for drinking water, proper septic system care and maintenance is essential. A failing septic system can cause backups and pose the risk of contaminating nearby private wells, putting families’ health at risk and costing thousands of dollars in repair or replacement.
To help raise awareness about the need for proper care and maintenance of septic systems and to encourage homeowners to do their part, EPA is launching its first annual SepticSmart Week, September 23-27. By taking small steps to care for and maintain home septic systems, homeowners not only help protect public health and the environment, they can save money and protect property values.
