NSF International Promotes Three Leaders and Scientific Experts to Key Global Positions
Expands NSF’s position as an international leader in providing testing, certification and R&D services to the pharma, water, food and consumer products industries
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — NSF International, a global independent public health organization that writes standards, and tests and certifies products for the health sciences, water, food and consumer goods industries, has promoted three leading scientific experts to its executive, health sciences and laboratory teams.
- Lori Bestervelt, Ph.D., has been promoted to NSF International Executive Vice President and Chief Technical Officer (CTO), formerly serving as NSF Senior Vice President and CTO.
- Bob Pietrowski, Ph.D., has been promoted to Vice President of NSF International’s Global Health Sciences Division, formerly Managing Partner of NSF-DBA.
- Kurtis Kneen, Ph.D., has been promoted to Vice President of NSF International’s Global Laboratories, formerly Director of NSF’s Chemistry Laboratories.
These three leaders will drive NSF International’s leading scientific and public health mission and deliver global solutions to meet clients’ growing testing, certification and research & development (R&D) needs.
Lori Bestervelt, Ph.D., Executive Vice President and Chief Technical Officer
Dr. Lori Bestervelt has been with NSF for 16 years, most recently serving as Sr. Vice President and Chief Technical Officer (CTO). As CTO, she directs NSF’s global network of engineering, chemistry and microbiology laboratories and toxicology services. She’s also served as Senior Vice President for NSF’s Health Sciences Division, which she launched. Dr. Bestervelt spearheaded the acquisitions leading to NSF’s broad range of testing, training and consulting services for the pharmaceutical, biotech and medical device industries. Additionally, she helped lead the development of the official American National Standard for Dietary Supplements (NSF/ANSI Standard 173) and the corollary programs by which NSF tests and certifies dietary supplements to this standard.
In her new role as Executive Vice President and CTO, Dr. Bestervelt will focus on leading cross-functional collaborative efforts across all departments and divisions of NSF in addition to leading NSF’s technical operations and health sciences programs.
Dr. Bestervelt has more than 25 years of experience in nutritional biochemistry, metabolism and toxicology. Throughout her career, she has applied her technical expertise to the assessment of human risk and regulatory issues and has addressed the safety of hundreds of materials used in dietary supplements, pharmaceuticals, drinking water components and systems, food equipment and consumer products. This includes developing risk assessments for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Health Canada and working with the World Health Organization on food safety and drinking water issues.
Dr. Bestervelt holds a Ph.D. in toxicology, master’s degree in nutritional biochemistry and bachelor’s degree in microbiology and immunology, all from the University of Michigan (U-M). Prior to joining NSF, she was a bench scientist at Pfizer. She is a member of the Society of Risk Analysis and the Michigan Society of Toxicology and serves on the advisory boards for the U-M School of Public Health’s new Momentum Center, Eastern Michigan University’s Molecular Biology/Biology Department and The Women's Center of Southeastern Michigan.
Bob Pietrowski, Ph.D., Vice President, NSF Global Health Sciences Division
Dr. Bob Pietrowski has been with NSF International for six years, leading NSF International’s training, auditing and consulting programs for the pharmaceutical and medical device industries. He has 34 years of experience in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device industries, including 23 years with the pharma/biotech consultancy NSF-DBA (formerly David Begg Associates), most recently serving as Managing Partner. NSF International acquired DBA in 2007.
In his new role, Dr. Pietrowski will oversee the NSF International Health Sciences Division, which offers training, consulting, auditing and testing to the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device and dietary supplement industries.
Dr. Pietrowski has extensive experience in biologicals and biotech manufacturing gained from many years in R&D, quality control and production management, culminating in the role of Quality Assurance Manager at the UK’s largest biologicals manufacturing site. He earned a Ph.D. in microbiology from the University of Birmingham and serves as an honorary lecturer in pharmaceutical science at the University of Strathclyde.
Kurtis Kneen, Ph.D., Vice President, NSF Global Laboratories
Dr. Kurtis Kneen has been with NSF for 17 years, most recently serving as Director of NSF’s Global Chemistry Laboratories. During this time, he expanded NSF laboratory capabilities, adding advanced technologies and developing and implementing new test methods for routine analysis and chemical testing. Dr. Kneen also played key roles in establishing NSF’s Shanghai, China laboratories, which offer comprehensive chemistry and engineering testing services, as well as NSF’s recent acquisition of the INASSA Group in Peru.
In his new role as Vice President of NSF’s Global Laboratories, Dr. Kneen will oversee all of NSF’s chemistry, microbiology and engineering laboratories throughout the U.S., Europe, South America and China, as well as NSF’s Applied Research Center, which provides R&D services to further public health across all NSF sectors.
Dr. Kneen has more than 25 years of experience in analytical chemistry and instrumental analysis, earning his doctoral degree in analytical chemistry from Michigan State University and a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Wittenberg University. He has taught laboratory courses at Michigan State University, is an active member of the American Chemical Society and has presented at national conferences including the Society of Toxicology Annual Meeting and the American Society for Mass Spectrometry.
