NSF is accredited to certify to the BRC Global Standard for Food Safety, developed by the British Retail Consortium. The standard helps promote consistency across the supply chain for food and ingredient manufacturers, wholesalers and distributors. It also reduces the number of customer audits and consolidates customer requirements.

BRC is a Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) benchmarked food safety standard covering food safety and management of product quality in food packing and processing operations.

BRC Packaging

To help ensure food safety at all levels of the supply chain, many food producers are now requiring packaging suppliers to implement a Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) program and to be certified to GFSI benchmarked standards such as the BRC/IOP Global Standard for Packaging and Packaging Materials.

This standard assists packaging manufacturers and converters to adopt good manufacturing practices and supports quality management systems to develop and manufacture safe, legal packaging materials meeting the customer’s quality requirements.

BRC Storage and Distribution

Storage and distribution are the final links in the food supply chain, connecting food producers to retail and restaurant end users. The BRC Global Standard for Storage and Distribution allows companies to demonstrate their competence in maintaining product safety and integrity. The standard is relevant to companies storing and/or distributing food, consumer goods and packaging, and is applicable to all forms of transportation.

NSF is accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) to certify to this BRC standard, which is designed to ensure best practice in handling product storage and distribution and to promote continuous improvement in operating practices.

Certification Process

Certification to BRC generally takes an average of six to nine months, depending on a facility’s level of readiness. The process follows eight basic steps:

  1. You apply to NSF for certification.
  2. We identify your training needs/you receive training.
  3. You perform a self-assessment of compliance with the standard.
  4. We perform an optional pre-assessment (gap analysis).
  5. We perform an onsite certification audit and identify corrective actions.
  6. Your facility addresses the corrective actions.
  7. We verify/approve corrective actions.
  8. We issue the certificate.

To maintain BRC certification, companies must re-certify every year.
