The NSF Biosafety Cabinetry Program was initiated in the 1970s at the request of the regulatory community, including the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI). We certify the design, construction and performance of biosafety cabinets to NSF/ANSI Standard 49 and run the Biosafety Cabinet Field Certifier Accreditation Program.
NSF/ANSI 49 applies to Class II biosafety cabinets, which provide personnel, environmental and product protection for work involving procedures assigned to biosafety levels 1, 2, 3 and 4.
