A health product declaration (HPD) is a product transparency reporting tool that identifies the materials or ingredients in a building product and the associated health effects. A key aspect of an HPD is the inventory of all content in the final product form and the associated health hazards. An HPD is not an assessment of risks associated with actual use of a product. It relates only to the potential health impacts of materials used in the final product. The goal is 100% disclosure of both material content identity and health hazards.

NSF can assess and verify your HPD document for a third party claim. NSF will conduct a desk audit of your HPDs and all the supporting documentation to verify compliance to the Health Product Declaration Standard. Once verified, and as an added value to our customers, NSF can post your HPD on our website. Alternatively, NSF can assist organizations through HPD development. Where suppliers have proprietary chemical or ingredient information, NSF can act as an independent agent to collect and protect sensitive information.

To find out more about HPDs, download an information paper. For more information on NSF services related to Health Product Declarations, call +1 734.827.5668 or e-mail

Benefits of Health Product Declarations

Health Product Declarations (HPDs) are called out in the LEED v4 green building rating system. HPDs can help products meet credit criteria for product content hazard reporting. For instance, in the BD+C rating system under the Materials and Resources credit, Building Product Disclosure and Optimization—Material Ingredients, Option 1, an end use product must have a published, complete Health Product Declaration with full disclosure of known hazards in compliance with the Health Product Declaration open Standard.

HPDs provide companies without life cycle assessments (LCAs) for their products a path for those products to still contribute to LEED v4 projects. Your organization is also showing willingness to participate in transparency reporting, which for many in the green building industry is an important consideration. Having HPDs for your building products can help them qualify for LEED projects and add a marketing advantage. Communicate loud and clear to the green building industry what’s in your products.

Why Work With NSF?

NSF can assist organizations through HPD development or third-party validate finished reports. Where suppliers have proprietary chemical or ingredient information, NSF can act as an independent agent to collect and protect sensitive information. If organizations develop their own reports, external validation of these documents by an independent third party adds additional credibility and can be seen as a further step in full transparency of information.

Whatever your situation, NSF has services to help get an HPD program working for you.

HPD Process

  1. Your company completes the application process and submits signed documents to NSF.
  2. Your company completes an HPD in the HPD Builder and compiles associated supporting documentation.
  3. Your company submits the HPD and associated supporting documentation to NSF.
  4. We conduct an off-site documentation review of the HPD and supporting documentation and provide feedback as needed.
  5. Once the HPD review is finalized, we will assign a verification number and list your verified HPDs in the NSF listings.
  6. We will schedule annual surveillance reviews with you.
