The 5-Second Rule Experiment: Is It Really OK to Eat Food That’s Fallen on the Floor?

Ever wonder if the five-second rule was really a rule? The Dr. Oz Show teamed up with NSF International to find out just that. NSF tested two food types, wet and dry (wet being an apple; dry, a wafer), on three different surfaces: tile, carpet, and concrete. After adding bacteria to each surface, food was dropped for two seconds, five seconds, and five minutes. After taking a culture of the food samples, the bacteria was counted to see if the rule was really valid. Watch this short video to find out the results. > Read More

NSF International’s Applied Research Center Partners with University of Michigan on M-CHEAR Program

NSF International’s Applied Research Center, which provides custom research and testing services, will partner with the University of Michigan to study the impact of the environment on children’s health as part of the Michigan hub of the Children’s Health Exposure Analysis Resource (M-CHEAR) Program. NSF’s Applied Research Center was selected as a partner with U-M on this project because of a strong history of successful collaborations between NSF International’s and the U-M School of Public Health. NSF International ARC was a natural fit as a collaborator for the project given its analytical expertise, exceptional quality, testing capacity, quick result turnaround time and commitment to protecting public health. > Read More

NSF-WRc Hosts an Educative Visit for Weston College

Recently, 12 students and two instructors from the Plumbing, City & Guilds Diploma Level 3 at Weston College visited the NSF-WRc labs in Oakdale, UK to gain some industry knowledge. This diploma is an advanced course to qualify plumbers in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The visit consisted of an educational tour in which our NSF-WRc colleagues Gareth Mapp (Programs Director), Lee Nichols (Senior Account Manager and Team Leader), Michael Bustin (Materials Laboratory Manager) and Ian Broad (Mechanical Laboratory Supervisor) provided various interactive presentations. > Read More

NSF International Updates NSF/ANSI 50 to Address Health Effects of Pool and Spa Chemicals

Global public health organization NSF International has published the first American National Standard to address the health effects of pool and spa treatment chemicals. The new edition of NSF/ANSI 50: Equipment for Pools, Spas, Hot Tubs and Other Recreational Water Facilities, evaluates the risk and toxicity of pool chemicals and also requires testing for trace contaminants in chemicals which are used in the treatment and circulation systems of swimming pools, spas and waterparks. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Pesticides evaluates and registers pool and spa disinfectants, algaecides and other biocides, but does not include other categories of chemicals such as sequestering chemicals, water chemistry balancing agents and filtration aids. Until now, no formal certification program has been in place to address the health effects of these products. > Read More

NSF-GFTC Signs Partnership Agreement with the Professional Evaluation and Certification Board (PECB)

NSF-GFTC, part of the NSF International family of companies, has entered into a partnership agreement with the Professional Evaluation and Certification Board (PECB).This partnership allows NSF-GFTC to extend its high quality much sought-after training courses, guidance and tools to a broader audience, helping organizations ensure that their products and services consistently meet customer requirements and high global standards for product safety and quality. The partnership with PECB will also add personnel certifications for international standards to NSF-GFTC’s suite of training offerings, including ISO 22000: Lead Auditor, ISO 9001: Foundation Course and ISO 9001: Lead Auditor, among others. > Read More

NSF-GFTC Welcomes Back Paul Medeiros to Key Leadership Role in Food Safety Services

NSF-GFTC, part of the NSF International family of companies, has added a new member to its global food safety leadership team. Paul Medeiros has been appointed Managing Director, Consulting and Technical Services, North America and Canadian Agriculture Certification Services. He will play a key role in expanding NSF International’s food safety and quality services. Based in Guelph, Ontario, Medeiros will oversee the strategic and operational functions of NSF International’s food safety business in North America as well as the agriculture certification business in Canada. > Read More

Applied Research Center Earns Independent Laboratory Status from AOAC

NSF International has achieved Independent Laboratory status as recognized by the AOAC Research Institute (RI). This qualifies NSF International’s laboratories to test and evaluate test kits and methods submitted to the AOAC Performance Tested Methods SM (PTM) program. NSF International’s Independent Laboratory scope includes antimicrobial, biochemical/nutritional, natural toxin, specific food allergen and microbiology testing. > Read More

NSF First to Earn ANSI Accreditation to Certify Manufacturers to Current GMP Standard

NSF Health Sciences Certification, LLC (NSF), which provides testing, auditing, certification and training for the pharmaceutical industry, has been accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to certify excipient manufacturers to the American National Standard for pharmaceutical excipients, NSF/IPEC/ANSI 363: Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) for Pharmaceutical Excipients. The globalization of the pharmaceutical industry, combined with a global regulatory focus on preventing counterfeit and adulterated products, led to the need for an updated excipient quality and control standard. The new standard was published by NSF International and the International Pharmaceutical Excipients Council (IPEC). It provides a comprehensive framework that incorporates the most current regulatory and industry requirements into a single rigorous standard for the manufacturing and distribution of pharmaceutical excipients. > Read More

NSF International Expands Dietary Supplements Program Leadership

NSF International, the public health and safety organization which developed the only American National Standard for dietary supplements (NSF/ANSI 173) and tests and certifies supplements to this standard, has expanded the program’s leadership team to support its rapid growth. Former General Manager Lisa Thomas will now devote her energy full time to growing the flagship NSF Certified for Sport® certification program as its Technical Manager while it continues to expand, working closely with professional sports leagues, anti-doping organizations, athletes, manufacturers, and retailers globally. > Read More

NSF Sustainability Program

NSF International First in Asia to Offer e-Stewards Responsible Electronics Recycling Certification

NSF International, a global public and environmental health organization, is the first to provide certification to the e-Stewards Standard for Responsible Recycling and Reuse of Electronic Equipment in Asia. Certification to e-Stewards also includes certification to ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems. Recom, Ltd, a Hwaseong, South Korea-based company that produces metal materials for recycling, is the first company to become certified to the e-Stewards Standard in Asia. > Read More


NSF-ISR Receives Approval From ANAB for Accreditation to ISO 9001:2015

NSF International Strategic Registrations (NSF-ISR) has received accreditation from the ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board (ANAB) for ISO 9001:2015, Quality management systems, which was published in September 2015. Companies can now begin certifying to the new standard through NSF-ISR. In order to gain accreditation, NSF-ISR’s ISO 9001:2015 Transition Plan was thoroughly reviewed by ANAB to ensure a high-quality operational process was in place and that we have an effective and efficient transition program that meets all of the expectations for this International Standard. The process that NSF-ISR uses to transition and register its clients to the ISO 9001:2015 standard is comprehensive and demonstrates a high level of competence by our staff and auditors. > Read More

NSF International and Tiremetrix Partner to Expand Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) Services

NSF International, a global certification organization with more than 70 years of certification expertise, has expanded its tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) services to include a newly announced independent registration program which saves cost and time. TPMS registration provides assurance that a TPMS meets the requirements of FMVSS 138 (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards) and functions in a manner equivalent to the original equipment (OE) service sensor. Tiremetrix, a leader in the management and distribution of TPMS data has added NSF International registered sensors to TPMS Manager® with a special NSF registered designation, providing shops with the background they need to service vehicles equipped with direct TPMS. > Read More

ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems Standard Released

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) published the updated ISO 9001 quality management systems standard on September 23, 2015. NSF-ISR will be working with each of client to ensure a smooth transition to the new international standard for quality management systems. > Read More

ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management Systems Released

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) published the updated ISO 14001 environmental management systems standard on September 15, 2015. NSF-ISR has reviewed the document and found no major changes, but rather an emphasis on improvements to reflect the latest industry trends. NSF-ISR will be working with each of client to ensure a smooth transition to the new international standard for environmental management systems. > Read More
