NSF certified products are now more easily found in GSA purchasing system

The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) added a new “green” icon to its GSA Advantage! online shopping and ordering service. An EPA Recommended icon is available for products that conform and/or are certified to one of the specifications, standards and ecolabels recommended by the EPA, which include a number of NSF International standards.

Four sustainability standards developed or co-developed by NSF International were included in EPA recommendations for federal purchasing:

  • NSF/ANSI 140: Sustainability Assessment for Carpet
  • NSF/ANSI 332: Sustainability Assessment for Resilient Floor Coverings
  • NSF/ANSI 336: Sustainability Assessment for Commercial Furnishings Fabric
  • ANSI/BIFMA e3-2014 Furniture Sustainability Standard, a standard co-written with the Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association

NSF clients that qualify for the EPA Recommended icons are encouraged to update their product information in the GSA systems to ensure that their products can be found.

EPA recognition of NSF International standards is an important step in extending the influence of these sustainability standards to a broader procurement audience. These sustainability standards have been successful in transforming industries and encouraging more sustainable products and processes. EPA acceptance could help further interest these industries in developing more sustainable products, which is a win-win.
