Independent registration helps identify tire pressure monitoring systems that meet federal regulations and function properly

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - NSF International, a global certification organization with more than 70 years of certification expertise, has expanded its tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) services to include a newly announced independent registration program which saves cost and time. TPMS registration provides assurance that a TPMS meets the requirements of FMVSS 138 (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards) and functions in a manner equivalent to the original equipment (OE) service sensor. Tiremetrix, a leader in the management and distribution of TPMS data has added NSF International registered sensors to TPMS Manager® with a special NSF registered designation, providing shops with the background they need to service vehicles equipped with direct TPMS.

At the 2015 SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) conference (November 3 – 6, 2015), NSF International will highlight the vehicle test fit and functionality-based requirements such as tire rotation and ensuring pressure values and location report properly which automotive in-wheel tire pressure monitoring system sensors must meet to earn registration.

NSF International engineers will evaluate the TPMS to make sure all registration and Transportation Recall Enhancement Accountability and Documentation (TREAD) Act requirements are met. The TREAD Act mandates the use of tire pressure monitoring systems technology in all light motor vehicles to alert drivers about underinflated tires. Tire pressure sensors that meet all federal regulations and functional requirements will be listed on the NSF International website.

“The addition of NSF International registered sensors in TPMS Manager® underscores the commitment to our customers by providing key product details which can help them make informed decisions. We support the efforts of companies that go above and beyond to validate the quality and functionality of their products,” said Joe Donehue, President of Tiremetrix, LLC.

“It is essential that consumers and regulators can trust that tire pressure monitoring sensors on vehicles function properly and NSF International’s TPMS registration allows manufacturers to demonstrate that their sensors do that. Additionally Tiremetrix’s TPMS Manager® will include NSF International registered sensors that have met federal regulations and functionality requirements to help shops identify high quality sensors,” said Bob Frayer, NSF International’s Global Managing Director of Automotive Certification Programs.

NSF International also offers TPMS Certification which provides assurance that an aftermarket TPMS meets the requirements for registration and additional durability requirements to withstand and continue to function properly after exposure to environmental conditions, pressure changes, chemical media, impacts, etc. that may occur during the lifetime of the sensor.

The TPMS programs complement NSF International's Automotive Collision Replacement Parts Certification Program, which certifies that automotive aftermarket parts meet rigid quality, safety and performance standards in terms of form, fit and function and NSF International’s Automotive Collision Parts Distributor Certification, which certifies distributors who sell aftermarket parts.
