NSF Publishes American National Standard for Single Ply Roofing Membranes
New NSF Standard provides manufacturers, specifiers and building industry with verifiable, objective criteria to identify sustainable roofing products
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — NSF International has developed an American National Standard for Sustainable Roofing Membranes - NSF/ANSI 347 Sustainability Assessment for Single Ply Roofing Membranes. Certification to NSF/ANSI 347 provides a transparent way for manufacturers of single ply roofing membranes to demonstrate their commitment to applying more sustainable approaches to product development and corporate operations, and enables them to differentiate their products in the marketplace.
NSF International, which has developed more than 75 American national public health and sustainability standards, developed the standard in partnership with a diverse group of stakeholders through the NSF National Center for Sustainability Standards (NCSS). The NCSS utilized an American National Standards Institute (ANSI)-accredited consensus process to develop NSF/ANSI 347, which included input from manufacturers, suppliers, regulatory officials, academia, industry representatives and end users. The NCSS has developed sustainability standards through this consensus-based process for a wide range of product categories, including chemicals, commercial furnishings, flooring, building products and materials, and water treatment and distribution systems.
Commonly used in the green building industry, single ply roofing membranes provide a waterproofing layer in both vegetative and conventional roof systems. The new NSF/ANSI 347 standard provides a framework for assessing the environmental and societal impacts of single ply roofing membranes across the product life cycle - from raw material extraction through manufacturing, use, and end-of-life management.
NSF/ANSI Sustainability assessment standards are recognized by companies, organizations and governments alike as credible tools for identifying and specifying more sustainable products. For example, the US Government Services Administration (GSA) through Executive Order 13514 has set a goal to ensure 95 percent of all new contracts require products and services with more sustainable attributes (e.g., energy and water efficient, recycled), many of which are identified as criteria in NSF/ANSI 347.
“As products with environmental claims continue to enter the marketplace, independent, third-party certification of products to national standards can help architects and specifiers make educated decisions about product selection,” said Dr. Ralph M. Paroli, Chair of the NSF/ANSI 347 Standard Committee. “NSF/ANSI 347 provides a standard of excellence in sustainability for the single ply roofing industry.”

Standards and products meeting those standards give professional roofing contractors real options for more sustainable products.”
How NSF/ANSI 347 Certification Works
NSF International provides certification to the new NSF/ANSI 347 standard through its NSF Sustainability division. NSF Sustainability helps companies develop standardized, objective methods of measuring sustainability that instill marketplace confidence and promote acceptance of more sustainable products and services.
Membrane products including, but not limited to, membranes produced from EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Terpolymer), KEE (Ketone Ethylene Ester), PVC (Poly[Vinyl Chloride]), TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin), and PIB (Polyisobutylene) polymers are evaluated in several key categories, including:
- Product Design – Integration of environmental and life cycle thinking into the product design process
- Product Manufacturing – Quantification of the environmental impacts from manufacturing, and actions to reduce or eliminate those impacts
- Membrane Durability – Membrane physical properties, service life, and repairability
- Corporate Governance – Human rights, child labor, forced labor, employee safety and education, and community responsibility
Certification to NSF/ANSI 347 is based on point totals to achieve a Conformant, Silver, Gold or Platinum level certification. Manufacturers certified by NSF earn the use of the NSF Sustainability Certified Mark on their products and in their advertising, and their certified products will be listed on NSF’s website.
