Silver Hill Farm Completes Certification to NSF International’s Global Traceable Down Standard
First vertically integrated down supply chain certified to practice the highest levels of animal welfare and traceability
ANN ARBOR, Mich. and EMYVALE, County Monaghan, Ireland – NSF International, a global public health organization, has certified Silver Hill Farm to the Global Traceable Down Standard (Global TDS). Silver Hill Farm is a fully integrated, family-owned duck company in Emyvale, County Monaghan, Ireland. Certification to NSF International’s Global TDS enables Silver Hill Farm to demonstrate that it practices the highest levels of animal welfare and that the down from its farm is fully traceable throughout the supply chain.
The NSF International Global TDS is an industry-wide standard for farms, brands and manufacturers that are committed to more responsibly-produced down. The rigorous certification criteria include on-site audits to confirm full traceability of down from parent farm to final product manufacturer and to verify the ethical treatment of birds throughout their lifecycle.
Silver Hill Farm operates a vertically integrated supply chain including the farm, slaughterhouse, and processing, prepared food and manufacturing facilities. Silver Hill Farm also operates Silver Hill, a manufacturer of globally distributed down pillows and duvets.
“Certification to the NSF International Global Traceable Down Standard was important to us as we consider this the premium standard in the marketplace,” said Gladys Keating, Technical Manager at Silver Hill Farm. “We understand our role as good stewards of our farm and through the NSF International Global Traceable Down Standard certification process we have further enhanced our commitment to animal welfare best practices.”
NSF International’s Global TDS includes animal welfare protection from practices such as live bird plucking to increase down yield or force feeding birds for foie gras production. It also extends animal welfare procedures to parent farms where animals typically live for at least four years and would be at greatest risk for live plucking.
“Silver Hill Farm has made a commitment to best practices for animal welfare and traceability. Their unique vertically integrated supply chain is the first supply chain of this type to be certified to NSF International’s Global Traceable Down Standard,” said Joshua Brugeman, Business Unit Manager for Responsible Sourcing at NSF International. “Certification to NSF International’s Global Traceable Down Standard provides its customers, and consumers, the most responsibly-sourced down products in the market.”
Global TDS was developed in a consensus-based process in partnership with stakeholders from the industry, manufacturers, retailers, animal welfare groups (such as Four Paws International), trade associations and other non-governmental organizations. These key groups developed, defined and agreed to the criteria for the final standard.
All companies that use down are encouraged to adopt the NSF International Global Traceable Down Standard and set a high benchmark for animal welfare and material traceability.
