Benefits of Toxicology Assessments
Our experienced toxicologists, chemists and microbiologists can evaluate your ingredients and products for any potential adverse health or environmental effects from naturally occurring or synthetic agents in your manufacturer’s formulations. Risk assessment typically includes an estimate of the probability of harm and a clear description of the various assumptions and uncertainties that go into the risk assessment. This can provide risk managers at your manufacturing facility a rational basis for making decisions about managing the use of chemicals or physical agents to protect public health in the dietary supplement industry.
Your company can use our toxicology risk assessments to evaluate the risk of potentially harmful substances during raw material purchase and product formulation, and as a useful tool in the event of any negative press about your company’s products.
Why Work With NSF?
Our risk assessment team can educate scientists, regulators, the media and the public on the importance of the use of sound science in risk assessment. We can format the risk assessment to meet your company's particular needs, assigning your company a personal NSF project manager and team of toxicologists and laboratory experts to walk you through the entire process.
We upload all of your data and reports to a private online account, where you and your chosen authorities can access them at any time. All work is confidential and protected, yet easily accessible for the account authority.
As an ANSI-accredited standards-developing body, we have strong relationships with regulators, manufacturers and consumers. This gives us unique insight into the dietary supplement industry that is essential for helping your company through the toxicological risk assessment process.

What toxicology services can NSF provide as part of the product certification process?
Our experienced toxicologists review submitted product formulations and labels to determine the appropriate content verification and contaminant testing to perform on the finished product based on the requirements of the applicable standard or guideline. Following completion of testing, our toxicologists review the test results to make a final determination on the acceptability of the finished product.
Are all products required to be tested individually as part of the product certification process?
No. Based on formulation similarities, we may select a single product as representative of a family of analogous products for content verification and contaminant testing. Those test results may then be used to assess the entire family of products for certification. Please note that this does not apply to banned substance testing.
Does acceptance of a product label by NSF toxicologists constitute an endorsement by NSF International of product functionality claims?
No. The review and acceptance of a label by our toxicologists does not constitute an endorsement by NSF International of product functionality claims. Our focus is to evaluate the product in accordance with the applicable standard or guideline for product safety, content verification and contaminant testing. A toxicological review does not include an assessment of product functionality.
Does NSF offer other toxicological services in addition to dietary supplements product certification?
Yes. NSF toxicologists can perform risk assessments for ingredients as well as products to determine safety based on the intended uses. We can also assist in preparing new dietary ingredient (NDI) submissions to the FDA and GRAS affirmations (both self affirmed or for submission to the FDA).
