Paul Merrick has over 40 years’ experience in engineering starting as an apprentice with ICI through a variety of engineering roles and work overseas. He has in-depth experience of pharmaceuticals operations and manufacture, quality control and quality assurance of parenterals prepared by aseptic processing including lyophilisation. He also has considerable experience in engineering support operations and pharmaceutical packaging technology and operations.

With this breadth of experience in pharmaceutical engineering and professional development of people. Dr. Merrick provides auditing, consultancy and training to pharmaceutical manufacturing clients.

For over 17 years he worked for AstraZeneca’s UK and French operations in a variety of engineering roles covering all types of pharmaceutical preparation. This included resource and asset management, maintenance and shutdown, project management, specialist and custom equipment design and procurement, and a variety of improvement projects focussing on compliance and production efficiency.

A Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), Dr. Merrick chaired the IMechE Pharmaceuticals Technical Activity Committee for four years and the IMechE Process Industries Division for three years. He has served as technical advisor for the Consultative Forum of Pharmaceutical Engineers for 17 years. He also lectured for 10 years at the University of Manchester in the Manchester Pharmacy School on pharmaceutical engineering, a post-graduate study program linked to the QP development portfolio.
