GreenScreen® for Safer Chemicals is a method for chemical hazard assessment to identify chemicals of high concern and safer alternatives. It is used by industry, government and NGOs to support product design and development and materials procurement, and as part of alternatives assessment to meet regulatory requirements.

The GreenScreen List Translator® is an abbreviated version of the GreenScreen method that provides a “list of lists” approach to quickly identify chemicals of high concern. It scores chemicals based on information from over 40 hazard lists developed by authoritative scientific bodies convened by international, national and state governmental agencies, intergovernmental agencies and NGOs.

GreenScreen was developed by and is a project of Clean Production Action.

Benefits of GreenScreen®

The GreenScreen® assessment helps manufacturers identify safer chemicals for a similar functional use and also supports informed substitution of materials and continual improvement. The benchmarking scoring system provides a simple method for non-technical buyers to consider hazards when making purchasing decisions, which reduces business risk and advances sustainability in product design.

The GreenScreen benchmark score helps suppliers communicate to downstream users the level of concern for a chemical using a tiered approach. The tiered approach helps companies prioritize the substitution of Benchmark 1 “Chemical of High Concern” and work towards Benchmark 4 “Safer Chemical”. With NSF as your assessor, your customers can be assured that the GreenScreen report is accurate and verified.

Why Work With NSF?

NSF International is an approved third-party profiler of ingredients and products for the GreenScreen® program. NSF provides toxicology and risk assessment services to evaluate ingredients, materials and products against U.S. and international regulations. Our professionals have evaluated over 100,000 products, with expertise in toxicology, regulatory compliance, chemistry, biochemistry, environmental chemistry, microbiology, industrial hygiene and engineering.

We can facilitate your company’s path toward safer chemical substitution by performing full GreenScreen or GreenScreen List Translator reviews, or by screening your products for known benchmark 1 chemicals.

Review Process

  1. Your company completes the application process and submits the completed forms to NSF, indicating the level of review required.
  2. We provide a quote for the review process and upon receipt of your signed contract, begin the review.
  3. We review your chemicals, contacting you and your suppliers at specific steps if chemicals need further review.
The exact steps required vary based on which type of review you choose and which chemicals are involved.
  4. Once all reviews are complete, we issue a final analysis report with scores for each chemical.
