- L.I.F.E.® Certification Process
NSF Sustainability is the exclusive auditor for the Tag and Label Manufacturers Institute’s (TLMI) Label Initiative for the Environment (L.I.F.E®) Program. TLMI is a member-driven industry association representing the narrow web tag, label and packaging industries. The L.I.F.E® Program, introduced in 2009, assists association members in identifying cost-effective initiatives and actions to reduce their company’s environmental footprint with a focus on continuous improvement.
What is L.I.F.E. About?
The L.I.F.E. Program is an audited certification process tailored specifically to the narrow web printing and converting industry. Members pursuing L.I.F.E certification will address many environmental issues including:
- Emissions, water, wastewater and solid waste reduction in their operations
- Policies for environmentally preferable cleaning and purchasing
- Material light-weighting to generate less waste
- Creation of disposable solutions for matrix waste
Companies are expected to control total energy utilization, report energy sources and detail what they are doing to actively reduce their overall carbon footprint. Companies are also rewarded for reporting innovations not covered by the program that help meaningfully reduce their environmental footprint.
Benefits of TLMI L.I.F.E.
TMLI L.I. F.E.® certification is relevant, easy and affordable.
The TMLI L.I.F.E. Program is tailored to your industry and designed by members of your industry. It is also general enough to cover your entire business operation and diverse technologies. It is a simple process to follow and grow into, and you can proceed at a pace that makes sense for your business.
You pay only for direct audit costs and investments in your business. These are investments that can pay back in cost savings from areas such as waste and energy reductions as well as marketing opportunities to tell your green story.
In addition, certification:
- Drives recycling programs for your products and materials
- Spurs integration of environmentally preferable product design into company practices
- Improves management practices because you manage what you measure
- Meets supplier and market demands for more environmentally friendly practices
L.I.F.E. certification is for your company/facility and not your product. Certified members can use the logo on their marketing materials, but not on the product package. Guidelines are available for use of claims and the logo.

L.I.F.E.® Certification Process
Certification typically takes seven to eight weeks to complete. Steps include:
TLMI member downloads materials from the TLMI website including the scorecard template.
The scorecard, which consists of 34 total points from 31 metrics and three options for innovation points, is organized into four categories:
- 1.0 Clean production techniques
- 2.0 Energy and greenhouse gases
- 3.0 Product design
- 4.0 Management practices
Members complete the scorecard and supporting documentation, and send them to TLMI headquarters.
Members must compile an electronic or paper submission including supporting documents for each metric score.
NSF receives the member scorecard from TLMI.
NSF emails the member the application/contract; member completes and returns it to NSF.
NSF contacts the member to discuss the certification process.
An NSF auditor performs the document review.
NSF provides a document review report to the member and schedules the on-site audit.
An NSF auditor performs the audit.
If there are no deficiencies, the auditor sends the updated scorecard and report to NSF. If there are deficiencies, the client has a specific timeframe to close all deficiencies before certification is recommended to TLMI.
TLMI grants certification once any deficiencies are resolved.
