NSF International provides all testing and certification needed for faucets and their accessories to gain product acceptance and compliance globally.

Faucets are required to meet strict performance standards in most countries to ensure they are safe, are leak-proof and do not have excessive flow rates. These standards ensure faucets and their components can withstand stresses over time and don’t leach harmful contaminants into drinking water.

North American Requirements

Faucet manufacturers selling into the North American market are often required by regulations or customer specifications to be compliant with the below standards and programs:

  • NSF/ANSI 61: Drinking Water System Components – Health Effects

    In North America, faucets are required to comply with NSF/ANSI 61, a standard that sets health effects criteria for many water system components. It also requires compliance with allowable lead levels defined in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA).

    Mechanical plumbing devices that are typically installed within the last liter of the distribution system, like faucets and related components, are addressed in Section 9 of NSF/ANSI 61.

  • NSF/ANSI 372: Drinking Water System Components – Lead Content

    Certification to NSF/ANSI 372 is proof of compliance with the lead requirements of the SDWA.

  • ASME A112.18.1/CSA B125.1: Plumbing Supply Fittings

    This standard covers the design requirements of plumbing supply fittings, including proper backflow prevention. It also contains performance requirements and test procedures. Certification to this harmonized standard is especially important for manufacturers selling faucets into the U.S. and Canada.

  • WaterSense

    This program was developed by the U.S. EPA and measures water efficiency and flow rate. This program allows manufacturers to demonstrate dedication to water conservation.

  • California Energy Commission (CEC)

    The CEC requires strict flow rate testing and registration of faucets, showerheads, toilets and pre-rinse spray valves to ensure they meet California water conservation laws. Product compliance to the CEC requirements and a listing on the CEC website is mandatory to sell in California.

Australian/New Zealand Requirements

Faucet manufacturers selling into the Australian or New Zealand market are often required by regulations or customer specifications to be compliant with the below standards:

  • AS/NZS 3718: Water supply – Tap ware

    This standard’s scope covers tap ware in Australia and New Zealand, forming the basis for WaterMark certification, which is mandatory. This standard contains tests for performance and durability and requires conformance to AS/NZS 4020.

  • AS/NZS 4020: Testing of products for use in contact with drinking water

    Manufacturers looking to sell into the Australian/New Zealand market are required to be in compliance with this standard, which evaluates the suitability of products for use in contact with drinking water.

European Requirements

Faucet manufacturers selling into the European market are often required by regulations or customer specifications to be compliant with the below standards and/or programs.

  • BS EN 200: Sanitary tapware. Single taps and combination taps for water supply systems of type 1 and type 2

    This standard covers performance testing of faucets with non-rising, rising spindle or quarter turn headworks.

United Kingdom

  • WRAS Approvals

    This standard demonstrates a product’s compliance with the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations or Scottish Water Byelaws. This approval is required for faucet manufacturers to sell into the UK.

  • BS 6920: Suitability of non-metallic materials and products for use in contact with water intended for human consumption with regard to their effect on the quality of the water

    This British standard is designed to test non-metallic materials for both health and aesthetic effects.

Italy

  • Origine e Qualita Controllata (OQC)

    This is a voluntary registration process for Italian manufacturers to demonstrate product quality and confirm production location in Italy.
