Forest management systems aim to balance commercial and noncommercial values with preservation of forest health and diversity. Every organization has different management needs, so NSF-ISR's Sustainable Forestry Program is customizable to meet your organization's goals. Choices include:

  • Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) forest certification (SFI 2010-2014 Standard)
  • Combined Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and SFI or Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) certifications (FSC offered through a partner firm)
  • American Tree Farm System (ATFS) certification (applies to small family forest landowners in the U.S.)

Benefits of Certification

In addition to protecting the environment, certification through NSF-ISR's Sustainable Forestry Program provides these benefits:

  • New sources of Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI), American Tree Farm System (ATFS) or Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified wood or maintenance of existing sources as more end users shift to requiring certification
  • Brand protection through competitive differentiation and a demonstrated commitment to social responsibility
  • Preferred vendor status with customers seeking more sustainable solutions
  • Recognized sustainable management of your forest lands for future generations

With certification you can use the SFI (and/or PEFC, ATFS or FSC) logos. As a third-party provider, NSF-ISR conducts independent audits of your organization's forestry operations, giving you a competitive edge as a leader in running an environmentally conscious business.

Why Work with NSF?

NSF-ISR is a worldwide leader in registrations and certifications. We have extensive knowledge of forest products industries. In fact, our team of forest industry auditors helped develop the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) standard. We audit to the SFI standard, adhering to recognized and formal interpretations, not to an individual auditor’s interpretation. NSF-ISR is one of only a few registrars recognized by ANAB to conduct SFI and American Tree Farm System (ATFS) certifications. We can also provide cost-effective joint SFI and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) audits that can save time, money and resources.

Certification Process

The process of certification through NSF-ISR's Sustainable Forestry Program involves these steps:

  1. Your company submits an application.
  2. NSF-ISR completes an on-site audit.
  3. You receive certification approval.
  4. We submit the certificate to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI), Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), American Tree Farm System (ATFS)) and/or Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) for registration.
  5. We complete regular surveillance audits, verifying ongoing conformance to the SFI, PEFC, ATFS or FSC standard.
  6. We re-certify the forest in the timeframe required by each standard.
