Brake Friction Registration

Navigate the stringent testing and registration process for friction materials with NSF’s expertise.

For more than 25 years, NSF has worked at the heart of the global automotive industry.

As a third-party registrar for the Brake Manufacturers Council, we test friction materials in an independent, third-party lab and register materials for compliance with state laws.

Let our team of experts guide you through the rigorous testing and registration process, so you can comply with state regulations and meet your business goals.

Friction Material Registration

Many U.S. state regulations limit the amount of asbestos, copper and other constituents used in brake friction materials for vehicles.

To comply with these regulations, manufacturers must make information about friction materials publicly available both online and on product packaging.

To sell brake pads legally in California or Washington, friction materials must also be tested by an independent, third-party lab and registered by an independent, third-party registrar. Even if your company sells or distributes brake pads solely online, your products must comply with California and Washington state laws. Companies that do not comply face up to $10,000 per violation in fines.

As operator of one of the only companies in the world that can handle both testing and registering friction materials, our experts can help you meet all state requirements and the highest standards for health and safety, while avoiding fines. We are also authorized by the Brake Manufacturers Council to license LeafMarks for display on compliant products.

Brake Material Coefficient of Friction Registration

Pursue registration of your brake material coefficients to mitigate liability and comply with multiple industry regulations.

Registration also gives your company a quick, easy and cost-effective way to publicly demonstrate your compliance with SAE J661 and other industry standards.

As an independent, third-party registrar, NSF registers hot and cold friction coefficients. We also act as a registrar for the environmental criteria set by Washington and California state law.
