An independent third-party public health and safety organization, NSF develops consensus protocols and standards, tests products against rigid requirements and certifies products to relevant NSF protocols and standards.

NSF's home product certification protocols were developed by our public health experts with input from key industry stakeholders including retailers, manufacturers, industry associations and regulatory agencies.
The protocols encompass all mandatory regulatory requirements (U.S./Canada/Mexico/EU) for material safety and labeling, and refer to industry accepted standards for verifying product performance and quality. In addition, we develop and incorporate innovative and transparent test methods for verifying product life cycle, durability and functionality. To ensure material safety, the protocols specify analytical tests for confirming the absence of harmful substances (heavy metals, phthalates, bisphenol-A) in products coming into contact with food.

OEHHA Issues Proposed NSRLs for Three Disinfection By-Products

On May 22, the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA), which assesses health risks of environmental contaminants in products sold in California, issued three notices of proposed rulemaking (NPRs) establishing proposed no significant risk levels (NSRLs) for three water disinfection by-products : trichloroacetic acid, dibromoacetic acid and dichloroacetic acid; also known as haloacetic acids. These NPRs were open for comment until July 7. OEHHA is now reviewing the comments and will then issue a final rule.
