Non-UPF Verification from NSF

Independent proof your food products are not ultraprocessed grounded in science, delivered by NSF.

What is it?

Consumers want food made with real ingredients and transparent methods. Retailers want clear standards they can trust.

The Non-UPF Verified Standard gives retailers, brands, and shoppers a clear, credible way to identify products that avoid the core hallmarks of ultraprocessing.

Through an independent, evidence-based evaluation, NSF verifies your products so you can move to market with confidence and credibility.

Only foods for human consumption, excluding produce, are eligible under the program. Vitamins and dietary supplements are not eligible.

Why Non-UPF matters

Ultraprocessed foods have become a flashpoint for shoppers, retailers, and product developers. Marketing alone won’t rebuild trust; independent verification will.

The Non-UPF Verified Standard gives brands a rigorous, practical pathway to:

  • Differentiate with a recognized, front-of-pack mark that shoppers can understand.
  • Accelerate reformulation using clear, actionable criteria.
  • Strengthen retail sell in with third-party proof behind your “less processed” positioning.
  • Meet consumer demands by aligning claims with a published standard and independent review.

What NSF verifies

The Non-UPF Standard focuses on how food is made and what goes into it. As a Technical Administrator (TA), NSF evaluates each product against program criteria in the following areas:

Processing limits

Products must be composed primarily of minimally or moderately processed ingredients and rely on permissible methods. Conditionally processed components are limited, and prohibited methods are not allowed.

Ingredient integrity and formulation

  • Ingredient and additive controls: Engineered additives associated with ultraprocessing are restricted or prohibited. The program also includes added sugar thresholds by category and disallows nonnutritive sweeteners.
  • Formulation transparency: We review ingredient decks, processing flowcharts, and supplier inputs to confirm conformance with the Standard while preserving essential food safety steps.

Important: Non-UPF does not assess overall nutrient adequacy or dietary suitability and does not replace any legal or regulatory requirements for labeling, safety, or marketing claims.

How the process works

  • 1

    Discovery and scoping

We align on your product list, categories, and target timelines, then define the verification pathway.

You will need to submit a PVP application to register with the Non-GMO Project. If you are an existing Non-GMO Project client interested in seeking Non-UPF Verification, you will need to sign an updated Unified License Agreement.

  • 2

    Technical submission

You provide formulations, ingredient specifications, process maps, and labels. We supply a checklist to streamline data gathering.

  • 3

    Independent evaluation

NSF technical reviewers assess processing methods, ingredient compliance, and category thresholds. You receive a clear findings report and, where needed, guided gap closure actions for rapid remediation.

  • 4

    Verification decision

Qualifying products are verified and eligible to use the program’s on-pack seal under approved usage guidelines.

Use of the logo must be in accordance with the Trademark Use Guide provided by the Non-GMO Project after licensing is in place.

  • 5

    Ongoing change control

We maintain product records, review material changes, and support you as the Standard evolves.

The Non-UPF Verified program is administered by the Non-GMO Project’s Food Integrity Collective; independent Technical Administrators (TAs) conduct product-level evaluations. NSF has been engaged in program development and serves in the TA capacity.

  • Findings summary with any corrective actions clearly prioritized.

Brand readiness checklist

  • Current ingredient statements, processing flow diagrams for finished products.
  • Specification sheets and processing flow diagrams for ingredients.

Don’t have all of this yet? We’ll meet you where you are and phase the submission.

Frequently asked questions

Is Non-UPF a nutrition program?

No. The program evaluates processing intensity, engineered additives, and added sugar contributions, not calorie or nutrient profiles.

Will I need to reformulate?

Some SKUs may require changes to ingredients or methods. Many brands achieve verification with targeted adjustments guided by our technical feedback.

Can I combine Non-UPF with other certifications?

Yes. Non-UPF can sit alongside quality, safety, or value attribute programs. We can help you plan efficient evidence packages.

What’s NSF’s role?
