Audits Starting on August 5 for BRCGS Gluten-Free Issue 4 Standard

As the market of gluten-free products continues to grow, BRCGS has published the new Issue of its Gluten-Free Certification Programme (GFCP) to help brands and manufacturers demonstrate even stronger commitment to consumers’ health and safety. Below is a quick summary of what to expect from this update.

• Consistent terminology. Issue 4 is the first one to be developed entirely by BRCGS, allowing for changes in terminology, to align it with the rest of BRCGS standards.
• Clearer onboarding and audit. While the onboarding process and audit protocol remain largely unchanged, they are now clarified and detailed, occupying a larger section of the standard.
• Easier navigation. Requirements are colour-coded and divided into smaller sections for easier identification and follow-through. Sections are also rearranged logically.
• Updated appendices. New appendices have been added, while two from Issue 3 (guides on sampling and grain handling) are now standalone documents.
• Examples of non-conformities. The standard now includes a review of the top 10 most common non-conformities from Issue 3 audits.

• Packaging Management. New clauses address packaging management to help prevent recalls due to the wrong product in the wrong package.
• Schedule A. The document that outlines the products eligible to carry the BRCGS gluten-free trademark—called Schedule A—was updated.
• Outside Processing. New requirements were included for management of outside processing.
• Graded non-conformities. Although the programme remains pass/fail (unlike the other BRCGS certifications, which come with a grading letter), non-conformities are now graded, clarifying audit outcomes (pass or follow-up visit).
• New AOECS section. A partnership with the Association of European Celiac Societies (AOECS) establishes equivalence between their standards and the Gluten Free Certification Programme, clarifying AOECS requirements for using their logo in European markets without a separate audit.

The audits for Issue 4 commenced on August 5, 2024. Any Gluten Free certification up for renewal after that date will have to follow the updated standards. If the 28-day window includes Aug 1-4th, 2024, you can choose between Issue 3 and 4.
