Expedited Market Approvals for Advanced Residential Wastewater Treatment Systems

Opportunities and new technology proliferate in the advanced onsite residential wastewater treatment systems industry. Recognizing that compliance requires an investment in both fees and time, NSF’s standards for wastewater treatment systems have been developed in layers rather than in isolation.

Opportunities and new technology proliferate in the advanced onsite residential wastewater treatment systems industry. Recognizing that compliance requires an investment in both fees and time, NSF’s standards for wastewater treatment systems have been developed in layers rather than in isolation.

For manufacturers certifying products, simultaneously certifying the same product to multiple standards can provide numerous benefits. For example, if tested sequentially, a manufacturer can simultaneously test a product against three NSF standards and achieve certification in six months instead of 18 months. In the same scenario, fees are also significantly reduced by as much as 50%.

Considering the cost and time benefits, manufacturers often take the opportunity to certify to multiple standards to enter new markets they may have otherwise postponed.

The following NSF wastewater treatment systems standards can be performed simultaneously in one test, with one system, and at one test location:

NSF/ANSI 40: The most recognized and required NSF standard for this industry, with more than 30 years of market use and acceptance

  • Certifies: CBOD5 and Total Suspended Solids reduction and pH control

NSF/ANSI 245: Meets the growing demand of nutrient reduction in many coastal areas and sensitive environments

  • Certifies: Total Nitrogen reduction, in addition to Std 40 requirements

NSF 350: For water re-use systems, to address depleting water sources, declining central water infrastructure, and the desire for more sustainable living

  • Certifies: Turbidity and E. coli reduction, in addition to Std 40 requirements

Customized testing

Various other analyses can be added to the above to address individual market needs with requirements beyond the NSF standards, such as those requiring demonstrating Fecal, Total, and Total Phosphorous reduction.

Multiple test locations

NSF utilizes test facilities in the United States, Canada, and Europe. All are equipped to provide testing to meet the NSF standards.

From the laboratory to the field

An increasing number of markets request or require field sampling of treatment system installations to further validate system performance and meet national standards for initial product approval.
