Organic Ingredients in Baby Care, Health and Beauty Products

Looking for health, beauty, baby or personal care products made with organic ingredients? The NSF/ANSI 305 mark is your assurance that these products meet USDA organic requirements.

You can find the mark on many types of baby care products, health and beauty products, and personal care products, including things like:

• Serums, creams, oils, toners, cleansers, moisturizers, and hand and body lotion
• Facial masks, lip balm, lipstick, lip oil and make-up remover
• After-sun sprays and gels, sunscreen, sun sticks and lotions with SPF or bug (mosquito) repellants
• Shower and bath gels
• Dish soap and hand soap
• Shampoos, conditioners and deodorant
• Baby wipes, diaper (rash) cream, baby sunscreen, baby powder and baby lotions

Products certified to NSF/ANSI 305:

• Contain at least 70% organic ingredients by weight (excluding mined minerals, water and salt)
• Meet requirements for organic ingredients, materials and processes as defined by the NOP
• List the exact percentages of organic content for each ingredient
• Contain no genetically engineered organisms

In addition, any certified products that create a lather or bubbles for cleansing were made using green chemistry processes and preservatives.

When shopping for health and beauty products with organic ingredients, look for the NSF/ANSI 305 certification mark. These products also meet the Amazon Climate Pledge Friendly Certifications criteria and many are available for purchase on their website.

For many years organic health and beauty product manufacturers were looking for a way to have their products certified as “containing organic ingredients.” This was tricky because USDA organic certification applies only to food products – whether food ingredients in food products or food ingredients (like honey) in personal care products. This meant products like soaps, lotions and baby care products that contained non-food organic ingredients couldn’t be labeled as organic.

Enter NSF. Our standards team assembled a group of people representing industry, consumers, regulators and trade associations to develop the only American National Standard for organic personal care products. Known as NSF/ANSI 305: Personal Care Products Containing Organic Ingredients, this standard builds on the USDA’s organic program requirements, but also covers production and labeling requirements specific to personal care products containing organic ingredients. Certification organizations (like NSF and our organic company, QAI, use the requirements in the standard to review products. Those that meet all the requirements can display the NSF/ANSI 305 mark.
