What is Electrical Safety Testing Certification and who is it for?
Before commercial kitchen and restaurant equipment can be sold for use in the US, it must comply with US electrical safety regulations. That means ensuring equipment has been tested and certified to meet two specific electrical safety standards set by the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
The two OSHA standards that must be met are:
- 29 CFR 1910 Subpart S
- 29 CFR 1926 Subpart K.
These standards are designed to keep employees safe at work, protecting them from dangers such as electric shock, electrocution, fires and explosions.
They apply to any manufacturer, anywhere in the world, that is seeking to manufacture food service equipment for the US market.
Who can issue Electrical Safety Testing Certification?
Electrical Safety Testing Certification can be issued only by an OSHA-approved and qualified certification body such as NSF.

- Commercial ice machines
- Commercial refrigerators
- Commercial freezers
- Commercial ice maker machines
- Commercial ice dispensers.

What other certifications are required before commercial refrigeration machinery can be sold into the US market?
