Chemicals, Generators and Controllers

The three-pronged approach to safer chemical feed systems.

Why compatibility and certification matter

When setting up a chemical feed system, three critical components must work together seamlessly:

  • The chemical
  • The chemical generator or feeder
  • The chemical controller.

All components should be compatible and certified to ensure safe and effective operation. Using the wrong chemical or concentration can lead to serious issues—such as corrosion, equipment failure, underdosing or overdosing, and even dangerous reactions like explosions.

Key considerations

  • Chemical feeders are designed for specific chemical types (solid, liquid, or slurry) and even specific formulations (e.g., trichlor vs. cal hypo).
  • This applies not only to disinfectant tablet feeders but also to mechanical feed pumps for other chemical dosing.
  • Incorrect chemical use can compromise system performance and safety.

Regulatory requirements

Beyond EPA registration for disinfectants and algaecides, the CDC’s Model Aquatic Health Code (MAHC) requires chemicals to be certified to:

  • NSF/ANSI/CAN 50
  • NSF/ANSI/CAN 60
  • Or have FIFRA registration.

The bottom line

Using compatible, certified chemicals, generators, and controllers helps ensure your entire chemical feed system operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with industry standards.

Pool and Spa Chemicals Certification
