Repaired or Modified: Is It Still Certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61?

Thirty years after the original publication of NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, many of those first certified products have likely required repairs or component replacements. Even the best-designed products experience normal wear and tear or unforeseen issues over time.
What happens after repairs?
NSF certification under NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 applies to products manufactured under controlled processes using authorised materials at the original production location.
However, repairs and maintenance can:
- Modify wetted surfaces
- Introduce new materials not evaluated during initial certification.
These changes fall outside the scope of the original certification.
How to maintain compliance
Utilities can help keep equipment in good standing by following these best practises:
- Use OEM replacement components to ensure exact parts and materials from the original manufacturer
- Choose NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 certified components, such as o-rings or gaskets, designed for use with other certified products
- Conduct risk and safety assessments if OEM or certified components are unavailable—always before considering a substitute part.
