NSF/ANSI 14 Certification Scope

While NSF/ANSI 14 is widely recognised for plastic pipes used in potable water systems, its scope extends to various end-uses such as non-potable water systems, heating and cooling systems, fire safety, and more.

NSF/ANSI 14 is a trusted standard for plastic piping systems, commonly associated with potable water applications. However, its certification scope covers a broad range of uses, including non-potable water, heating and cooling systems, fire safety, and more.

NSF conducts rigorous testing based on ASTM and ISO standards, including evaluations for Hydrostatic Design Basis (HDB) and Minimum Required Strength (MRS) to ensure long-term performance and reliability.

Certified applications for plastic pipes

Potable water systems

The Safe Drinking Water Act requires drinking water products to be certified as lead free consistent with NSF/ANSI/CAN 372. State waterworks regulations require drinking water materials to be certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61. Potable water products certified to NSF/ANSI 14 satisfies both requirements. In addition, plumbing codes require plastic pipe and fittings to be certified to NSF/ANSI 14.

Gas distribution

Polyethylene gas (PE) pipe and fittings used for outdoor and underground applications are evaluated to ASTM D2513 and CSA B137.4 standards. These products are typically regulated by utility specifications and building or plumbing codes, which commonly require third-party certification. NSF/ANSI 14 certification ensures product formulation consistency, annual monitoring tests, and ongoing quality control testing.

Radiant heating systems

The International Mechanical Code requires hydronic pipe and fittings to be certified to NSF/ANSI 14. Certified radiant heating pipes meet standards for temperature and pressure resistance, oxygen barrier protection, and code compliance.

Reclaimed water systems

PE and PVC pipe used in municipal reclaimed water applications are purple and evaluated to the same requirements as potable water, except for NSF/ANSI/CAN 61. Reclaimed water piping inside buildings is typically CPVC, PEX, or PP and must be third-party certified to NSF/ANSI 14.

Electric and utility conduits

PVC and HDPE conduit systems offer non-conductive properties, corrosion-resistance, and lightweight durability for safe routing of electrical and utility lines. NSF certifies to UL 651, UL 651A and NEMA TC standards. The National Electrical Code requires third-party certification of electrical conduit.

Fire safety applications

NSF certifies PVC and PE pipes and fittings for underground fire service water mains to UL 1285 and FM 1612/1613 standards. Fire sprinkler pipe and fittings are certified to UL 1821. These third-party certification are required by utility specifications and NFPA standards.

Geothermal energy systems

Ground source loop pipe is essential in ground-source heat pump (GSHP) systems, supporting sustainable heating and cooling. The International Mechanical Code requires geothermal piping to be third-party certified and NSF/ANSI 358-1 (PE), 358-2 (PP), 358-3 (PEX), 358-4 (PE-RT) are referenced.

Sewer infrastructure

Certified plastic pipes ensure reliability and performance in underground sewer systems—critical for public safety and infrastructure longevity. Cured-in-place pipe is also certified to NSF/ANSI 14 and ASTM F1216 for rehabilitation of existing sewer lines.

Drain, waste, vent (DWV)

Plumbing codes require DWV pipes and fittings to be certified to NSF/ANSI 14. NSF certification ensures compliance and reliability.
