BRCGS S&D Certification

BRCGS Storage and Distribution is a global certification designed to ensure the transparency and integrity of logistics operations. The standard provides strong safety protocols for all aspects of storage and distribution and flexible scopes for different types of operating models.

How BRCGS S&D is structured

The BRCGS Storage and Distribution standard applies to:

  • Operations at any point in the distribution chain, from primary production to retail (including online stores)
  • Transportation by road, rail, air freight, or ship
  • Multiple product types: food (ambient, refrigerated, frozen, and hot), packaging materials, and consumer products.

Depending on their model, logistics operations can implement the full standard or select relevant components:

  • Transport only: For operations that directly manage all distribution vehicles and focus on the movement of goods, without handling loading or unloading activities.
  • Distribution only: For operations that directly manage both distribution vehicles and handling operations.
  • Storage only: For operations that own, lease or subcontract the storage locations, while directly managing staff, quality systems, and maintenance of facilities.

Additional voluntary modules

Logistics operations can also choose from nine additional voluntary modules (AVM). AVMs extend the base standard to emerging storage and distribution practices, ensuring safe transitions or handoffs, when products are most vulnerable.

Two new AVMs introduced with the latest S&D certification edition (issue 4) were:

  • E-commerce module for the growing online sales sector, with a focus on distribution networks for last-mile delivery.
  • Cross docking module for remote cross-docking locations that differ from the main certificated facility.
