Marty Makary confirmed as new FDA Commissioner

Late on Tuesday 25 March 2025 the US Senate conformed Marty Makary as the new FDA Commissioner by a 56 to 44 vote. He was sworn in by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. the following day.
Marty Makary was formerly a surgeon at John Hopkins University Hospital.
He takes over at what is a challenging time for FDA, which has recently seen significant staff and facility reductions initiated by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and the consequent resignation of some of senior FDA leaders.
