Concrete Sustainability Council (CSC) Certification
Demand for concrete materials with verifiable sustainability is increasing worldwide. Demonstrate your cement, aggregate or concrete products comply with green building claims, with a CSC certificate from NSF. CSC is recognized in leading green building labels including BREEAM, DNGB, LEED and OGNI, and is the benchmark tool withing the industry.

Concrete is one of the most widely used materials globally, but its carbon-intensive production has long been a cause for concern. Consequently, more and more public and private construction projects are looking to work with concrete, cement and aggregate suppliers who can prove that they have ethical and sustainable sourcing practises in place. CSC certification provides that proof. As an approved certification body, NSF is here to provide a straightforward certification process at every step.
Why third-party CSC certification is important
Creating differentiation in a crowded market can be tough. Demonstrating your credibility when bidding for work can be even tougher. That’s why CSC certification can be a powerful asset.
To achieve it, you will need to:
- Prove your materials sourcing is ethical and sustainable.
- Show that you’ve adopted better environmental practises.
- Prove that workers throughout your supply chain are looked after and protected.
- Demonstrate your products comply with schemes like LEED and BREEAM.
Assessment for certification is carried out against a standardised framework that encourages lower CO2 emissions, energy efficiency, and better resource management, and upholds fair labour practises, worker safety, and community engagement.
Because CSC certification requires third party audits and scoring across environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria by approved independent certification bodies such as NSF, it validates sustainability claims, helping to build client and industry trust.

What are the benefits of CSC certification?
CSC certification supports LEED, BREEAM and DGNB compliance, opening the door – and borders – to bidding on green building projects around the world.
It helps cement producers, aggregate suppliers, and concrete manufacturers to:
- Enhance their brand reputation and competitiveness by providing a recognised “green identity”.
- Meet evolving environmental regulations and directives, especially in Europe.
- Build confidence among clients, investors, and regulators through transparent ESG reporting.
How to get a CSC certificate
First things first, gauge your current sustainability performance using the Quickscan Tool available in the CSC Toolbox - it’s free to use and will help you to identify where you are strong, and where you have gaps to address.
Don’t worry if you’re not sure where to start, you’re in safe hands. Our experienced team will guide you through each step of the certification process:
- 1
Prepare documentation
We’ll ask you to gather evidence across CSC’s ESG criteria:
- Environmental: CO2 emissions, energy use, water management.
- Social: Labour practises, health and safety, community engagement.
- Governance: Compliance, transparency, anti-corruption.
- 2
Desk review
We’ll conduct a desk review of your documentation.
- 3
On-site audit
One of our auditors will visit your site to conduct an in-person audit, scoring your organization’s performance across specific ESG criteria.
- 4
Certification issued
Based on your score, you’ll be awarded one of four levels of certification: Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum.
- 5
Maintain and improve
Certification is valid for three years with interim surveillance audits carried out annually. You’ll be able to use the feedback from these audits to improve practises and, if applicable, work your way up to the next certification level.
Is CSC certification only for large companies?
No. The size of your business – and where you are on your ESG journey – doesn’t matter. That’s because CSC certification is scalable, affordable, and covers a broad range of sustainability topics – social, governance, and environmental.
