Reducing Our Footprint

NSF’s environmental focus points revolve around climate and water stewardship.

Climate

Our climate efforts strive to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions generated by our offices, laboratories and workforce travel. We have publicly committed to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), and are tracking our scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions to identify emission drivers, set reduction targets, and monitor and report our carbon emissions globally. NSF has implemented an Environmental Management Systems (EMS) policy, grounded by environmental targets and objectives that strive to meet and exceed pertinent environmental laws, regulations and other applicable requirements.

Water

Water efforts focus on reducing and re-using water in our offices and especially our world-class laboratories. Specialized equipment enables us to re-use water for part of our operations, decreasing use of freshwater resources and ultimately climate emissions generated in water delivery systems. Additional responsible management practices also include the secure disposal of chemicals and the mitigation of toxic runoff and hazardous waste within our labs.

NSF holds a LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification for its lab fixtures and finishes and a LEED Silver certification for its design and construction in 80,000 square feet of lab space at its global headquarters in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The green building program rating system, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, is the preeminent program for the design, construction, maintenance and operation of high-performance green buildings. LEED features include low-flow water fixtures, bicycle storage and changing rooms, ENERGY STAR® equipment, use of recycled and locally-sourced materials, increased ventilation and LED lighting and occupancy sensors.
