Independent Free-Run and Free-Range Egg Certification by NSF

Build consumer trust and meet buyer requirements with verified free-run and free-range certification.

Consumer demand for cage-free eggs is driving rapid market growth. Globally, over 2,500 businesses—egg producers, retailers, foodservice operators, and manufacturers—have committed to cage-free eggs, with the market expected to double by 2035.

But this growth comes with a trust challenge. Consumers rate cage-free production as superior on animal welfare, sustainability, and environmental impact, yet many can't tell if "cage-free" and “free range” claims are genuine or just marketing.

Independent third-party certification solves this trust problem, separating genuine welfare improvements from misleading claims, as "cage-free" becomes the consumer expectation baseline.

NSF's Cage-Free, Free-Range, and Free-Run Certification

NSF's Cage-Free, Free-Range, and Free-Run Certification provides independent verification of animal welfare practices to organizations that produce or use cage-free or free-range eggs, building consumer trust and meeting buyer requirements for humane egg production.

The certification was developed for egg producers, processors and packers, and hospitality operators. It comes in two variations:

NSF Cage-Free and Free-Run Certification: Ensures that birds are not kept in battery cages and have freedom of movement within barns.

Certified Free-Run (for Canada)

NSF Free-Range Certification: Includes Cage-Free requirements plus outdoor access for birds, with a minimum of 6 hours daily during daylight hours when weather permits.

Processors and packers, and hospitality operators can obtain a “Made with Cage-Free/Free-Run” or “Made with Free-Range” certification for multi-ingredient food products made with compliant eggs.

How the certification process works in six steps

  • 1

Connect with the NSF sales team

The first point of contact for your Cage-Free/Free-Range certification is the NSF Sales Team. You will be connected with an sales representative who will provide information about the process and answer any questions. The sales representative will also gather key details about your certification needs to prepare a customized quote.

  • 2

    Submit your application

Once you have signed the quote, you will be assigned a dedicated Project Manager who will start your certification process and request application documents. Required documentation includes a completed compliance plan (template provided by NSF), a complete list of facilities and products, product labels, and facility SOPs. Once your documentation is submitted, NSF will begin reviewing your application.
  • 3

    Complete the audit

Once the application review is complete, NSF will schedule an audit of all sites involved in the production (farms and processing or packaging facilities, as deemed required by the protocol). The audit lasts approximately 4 hours. During the audit, the auditor will review practices and records under the scope of the protocol. Farm audits must be scheduled while animals are on site. Facility audits must be scheduled while the product or certification is in production.

Food service and hospitality applicants shall undergo a remote assessment of records required for certification and are not required to have an on-site audit. However, egg suppliers for listed products to the foodservice or hospitality brand must demonstrate compliance with the protocol through NSF certification or equivalent program.

  • 4

Respond to non-conformances or requests for additional information

At any time during the process, NSF may request more information or issue a non-conformance if documentation or practices are not in conformance with the protocol or if the auditor identifies deficiencies on site. You will be asked to identify and document the root cause of the deficiency, as well as preventive and corrective actions. Non-conformances must be addressed within 30 days of the audit. The response timeline is subject to change depending on the severity of the non-conformance. In the event of a failed audit, re-inspection will be required. NSF must approve all audit information, documentation, and non-conformance responses prior to certification.

  • 5

    Certification is granted

Once NSF confirms full compliance with the protocol for the approved claim ( Cage-Free or Free Run, or, Free-Range) protocol, certification is granted. The certificate lists the certified sites and products, and certified products are also listed on NSF's public listings website. Certification is renewed annually with annual audits. Any changes to certified products or production must be submitted to and approved by NSF prior to implementation.
