Demonstrating Sustainability with NSF-ISR's Accredited Services

Understand the Responsible Recycling version 3 (R2v3) standard, which replaces R2:2013 for responsible recycling practices for use in accredited certification programs, as well as other sustainable standards to support your business.

When it comes to demonstrating the sustainability efforts of your organization to partners, clients and the public, working with an accredited certification body, such as NSF-ISR, can provide third-party validation of your efforts. From electronics recycling to environmental management systems, NSF-ISR provides a variety of sustainability services.

R2v3: The Responsible Recycling Standard

NSF-ISR recently achieved accreditation to the Responsible Recycling version 3 (R2v3) standard and proudly certifies to it as it champions electronics sustainability in several ways, including net-neutral and economic inclusion. Released in July 2020, the standard was created by Sustainable Electronics Recycling International (SERI) through its ANSI processes. It provides a common set of processes, safety measures and documentation requirements for businesses that recycle and/or repair used electronics. This standard is a great advancement for sustainability, given that the best way to keep electronics out of landfills continues to be the reuse of devices and components.

R2v3 is a revised version of the R2:2013 standard, meaning that all R2:2013 certificates that expire on or after January 1, 2022, are required to transition to R2v3. As of July 1, 2023, all R2:2013 certificates will expire. NSF-ISR can support certificate holders with transferring to the R2v3 standard.

Additional NSF-ISR Recycling Services

In addition to certifying to the R2v3 standard, NSF offers certifications to several other standards for businesses working toward a cleaner Earth, including:

  • Recycling Industry Operating Standard (RIOS)

A standard for the recycling industry’s integrated quality, environmental, health and safety management system.
  • E-Stewards

A comprehensive set of performance requirements created specifically for the electronics recycling and asset recovery industries.
  • ISO 9001

A quality management system standard that helps organizations reliably meet the needs of clients in both the delivery and the continuous improvement of products and services.
  • ISO 14001

An environmental management system standard that supports the environmental pillar of sustainability.
  • ISO 45001

A standard for an occupational health and safety management system that provides a framework to increase safety, reduce workplace risks, prevent work-related injuries and ill health, and create an organizational culture supporting continual improvement.

The Value of Accreditation

Sustainability at all levels is more important than ever before. As businesses work to address this urgent need, no effort is too small. Certification bodies, such as NSF-ISR, which are accredited to provide third-party, independent certification services can attest to the competency of the services your organization provides and ensure that they are compliant with established national and international standards. NSF-ISR adheres to accreditation standards and regulatory requirements and policies to ensure that evidence-based processes are documented.
