NSF’s Marcos Bensoussan to Serve on IWA Water Safety Planning Committee

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The International Water Association (IWA) has selected Marcos Bensoussan, General Manager of Global Building Water Health at NSF, to serve on a management committee charged with helping protect the world’s water supply systems.

As a member of the Management Committee of IWA’s Specialist Group on Water Safety Planning, Bensoussan will help guide the group’s efforts to disseminate practical knowledge on water safety planning to stakeholders involved in delivering safe drinking water. These stakeholders include water utilities, regulatory agencies, health organizations and the international water community at large.

Bensoussan, based in São Paulo, Brazil, has more than four decades of experience in water systems safety and is a renowned expert on Legionella bacteria control and water safety planning. NSF, a global public health and safety organization founded in 1944, provides a range of services for the water industry to help ensure the quality and safety of drinking water, and, separately, has facilitated the development of public standards for drinking water.

“Safeguarding our water supply systems is a matter of utmost importance and establishing good water safety plans on a global scale is vital to meeting this objective,” said Bensoussan, who joined NSF in 2016. “It will be a privilege to help the committee and the IWA in their efforts to assist stakeholders in delivering safe drinking water.”

The 13-member Management Committee includes water-safety scientists and practitioners from universities, utilities, companies and organizations in countries ranging from South Africa to Sweden to Singapore. Among other duties, the Management Committee leads the planning and implementation of processes for the Specialist Group on Water Safety Planning, and also ensures the group’s goals and objectives are achieved.

IWA strives to connect water professionals worldwide to find solutions to pressing water challenges, such as water shortages and contamination, as part of a broader sustainability agenda. IWA has 50 water-related Specialist Groups, each overseen by a Management Committee.
