Description

On 24 October the UK government announced the setting up of a new AI Biosecurity Lab, see Introducing the AI Biosecurity Lab - GOV.UK .  This will be the world’s first dedicated AI biosecurity organisation. Backed by £100 million of UK government funding, and up to £200 million in company commitments from OpenAI and Anthropic, it will develop technical capabilities that help the UK better understand, prevent, detect and respond to biological threats, building on the UK’s broader Biological Security Strategy.

The AI Biosecurity Lab (AIBL) mission will be to strengthen our biosecurity by harnessing frontier AI. It will bring together frontier AI and biological science talent to develop practical technical capabilities that improve the UK’s ability to understand, prevent, detect and respond to biological threats.

AIBL’s cutting-edge research will strengthen UK and global resilience to a wide range of biological risks, including those enabled by advances in AI.

Initial delivery will focus on developing and deploying capabilities that:

  • Enhance early detection of emerging biological threats
  • Accelerate the development of vaccines, treatments and other medical countermeasures

AIBL will operate as an independent, non-profit organisation and is designed to establish the UK as the world-leader in AI-enabled biosecurity. AIBL will be supported by a scientific advisory committee drawing on expertise from academia, industry and the third sector.

AIBL will work with the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to prepare for health emergencies and inform the regulation of AI-designed medicines.
