NSF Launches Automotive Rearview Camera Registration

HUSHAN Autoparts demonstrates compliance with federal motor vehicle safety standards by earning first NSF registration for automotive rearview cameras

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – NSF, a global organization with more than 70 years of independent product testing and certification expertise, has launched a registration service for automotive rearview cameras based on federal motor vehicle safety standards and additional testing requirements for fit and functionality. HUSHAN Autoparts is the first manufacturer to earn NSF registration for motor vehicle rearview cameras.

NSF’s automotive rearview camera registration covers cameras functioning as part of the rear visibility systems on passenger cars. NSF registration allows manufacturers of cameras, such as HUSHAN Autoparts, to demonstrate that their products can be mounted appropriately and have been independently tested and evaluated to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 111 (FMVSS 111): Vehicle Rearview Image Field of View and Quality Measurement. The evaluation also includes field-of-view and response-time testing.

HUSHAN and other camera manufacturers that meet all requirements of this registration appear in NSF's online registration listings. The products bear the NSF Registered Part mark, which can also be highlighted in marketing and other promotional materials.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), all new cars will include rearview cameras by May 2018. Rearview cameras are designed to prevent potentially deadly back over crashes. NHTSA estimates that as many as 69 lives can be saved each year once every vehicle under 10,000 pounds is equipped with a rear visibility system.1

According to YC Chen, CEO of HUSHAN, “NSF’s registration program helps identify high quality rearview cameras meeting FMVSS requirements. When distributors, repair shops and insurers see a camera with the NSF Registered Part mark they can be assured that the camera meets essential requirements for mounting, field of view and response time.”

“Registration by an independent, third-party organization provides added assurance that rearview cameras on vehicles meet federal regulations while also functioning and fitting correctly,” said Bob Frayer, Global Managing Director of Automotive Certification Programs at NSF.

In addition to automotive rearview cameras, NSF also registers brake friction materials, mirrors and tire pressure monitoring systems through its automotive registration program to ensure the highest quality parts and services.
