Workplace Safety Collaboration Helps Small Business Owners Navigate COVID-19 Risks

Innovative, public-private partnership between the State of Michigan and NSF is helping businesses take appropriate steps to comply with COVID-19 requirements and operate safely during the pandemic.

Business owners in Michigan are welcoming the state’s “educate-before-you-regulate” approach to COVID-19 workplace safety compliance – made possible by an innovative public-private collaboration between the State of Michigan and NSF.

Employers who might normally be hesitant to invite workplace safety regulators into their businesses are embracing the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) COVID-19 Workplace Safety Ambassador program.

As part of the MIOSHA Ambassador program, NSF ambassadors work with Michigan businesses to help them understand and follow the appropriate workplace safety regulations. They offer free education and one-on-one support to help businesses apply safety directives to their individual situations.

“States and provinces are not staffed to support the one-on-one outreach and consultation required during a pandemic, so it makes sense for the State of Michigan to call up a reserve of qualified private sector, public health and safety ambassadors to educate businesses about COVID-19 risks,” Medeiros said.

NSF’s Paul Medeiros recently wrote about the success of the MIOSHA Ambassador program in an op/ed published in the Lansing State Journal.
