Companies worldwide are part of the solution to a lower carbon economy and are taking initiative to demonstrate to investors and other stakeholders that they not only can sustain themselves, but thrive in any climate scenario. Company survival will depend on understanding the effects of temperature, water and weather extremes on current operations and future infrastructure and taking steps to become climate resilient.

NSF International is dedicated to being the leading global provider of public health and safety-based risk management solutions while serving the interests of all stakeholders, namely the public, the business community and government agencies.

We offer a multitude of services to meet your sustainability goals and can support company-wide strategies, helping build more sustainable brand equity and differentiating your products and services in a marketplace crowded with unsubstantiated claims. We have the scope and experienced professionals to handle any type or size of climate-related service you might need.

Organizations that heed the call for improved energy efficiency and infrastructure resiliency are in the best position to prosper in a low-carbon economy. Identifying potential risks can lead to strategies that reduce or contain costs, increase flexibility and build opportunities even in an unknown future with a changing climate.

GHG Verification and Validation

The transition to a low-carbon economy requires organizations to identify opportunities for emissions reductions and integrate this information into their capital spending plans. Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions measurement and reporting can help identify ways to improve performance, reduce risk, protect or enhance your organization’s reputation, and secure shareholder and stakeholder trust. Accounting for GHG emissions is a building block for organizational and supply chain sustainability reporting and evaluation.

NSF International provides verification of GHG inventories and validation and verification of GHG projects. We also verify the carbon footprint of product labels, which is an emerging regulatory requirement, especially in European markets.

Quantifying GHG emissions allows your organization to:

  • Identify opportunities for improving energy efficiency and reducing operating costs
  • Meet public and shareholder expectations for responsible GHG management
  • Comply with governmental regulations for CO2 and other GHG reporting
  • Validate and verify carbon offset credits
  • Provide confidence in the reliability of your carbon footprint assertions
  • Enhance public credibility of GHG emission reduction efforts
  • Satisfy regulatory and voluntary GHG reporting program requirements
  • Strengthen your management of GHG opportunities and risks

Accreditations and Approvals

NSF International holds multiple accreditations and approvals for climate services.

NSF International is an ANSI-accredited product certification body - accreditation #0216. ANSI accredits us to:

  • ISO 14065:2013 as a validation and verification body in waste management (including methane destruction) and livestock manure management
  • Verify GHG inventories in these sectors: general, manufacturing, power generation, mining and mineral production, chemical production, oil and gas, waste, agriculture, forestry and other land use (AFOLU)
  • Verify these project scopes: forestry, emissions reductions from industrial processes and ozone depleting substances/nitric acid emission reduction

The California ARB approved NSF International to verify inventories in these sectors: general stationary combustion, transactions, oil and gas systems and process emissions.

The Climate Action Reserve (CAR) approved NSF International to verify projects in forestry, livestock methane management, ozone depleting substance destruction and landfill gas management.

Green Bonds

Green bonds have been identified by many in the investment community as an effective instrument for financing the transition to a low-carbon economy. Green bonds represent an opportunity to channel investment away from fossil fuel risk and into more sustainable infrastructure needed to support this transition.

The issuer of a green bond pledges to spend the money raised on projects with environmental benefits. Labelling a bond “green” generates more investor interest and makes environmentally-friendly projects easier for investors to find and support. The green bond market is growing rapidly. About $3 billion in green bonds were issued in 2012 and $41.8 billion in 2015. The call for green bonds is high among investors, but there are not enough green bonds to satisfy this demand.

NSF is an approved verifier through the Climate Bonds Initiative to provide services in green bonds in North America for the following sector criteria: solar, wind, water and low carbon buildings. The Climate Bonds Standard is a tool that allows investors and intermediaries to assess the environmental integrity of bonds claiming to address climate change mitigation.

Investors are becoming more interested in incorporating environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors into their investment practices. Certifying a green bond demonstrates that your organization is participating in the move towards a low-carbon economy and meets these environmental aspects.

CDP Report Verification

Companies reporting through CDP are taking action to deliver a low-carbon and resource-abundant world. Improving corporate awareness through measurement and disclosure is essential to the effective management of carbon and resources risk.

To be awarded Leadership points, at least 70 percent of Scope 1 emissions and 70 percent of Scope 2 emissions must be verified. Leadership points for Scope 1 and Scope 2 verification must have been awarded for a company to get the highest score of A and be included in the coveted CDP A List.

NSF is an accredited CDP service provider and an ANSI-accredited product certification body (accreditation #0216), and can provide verification of CDP climate and sustainability data.  Verification allows your company to demonstrate leadership in sustainability.

Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA)

NSF offers verification for the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction for International Aviation (CORSIA) program, administered by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). CORSIA is a key element of ICAO’s strategy for achieving carbon-neutral growth from 2020 onward.

Timing and Deadlines

As of January 1, 2019, airplane operators need to implement a monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) system for CO2 emissions from international flights. The annual emissions reports must be verified by an independent third party.

CORSIA’s carbon offsetting scheme has three phases:

  1. Pilot Phase (2021-2023) – Voluntary
  2. First Phase (2024-2026) – Voluntary
  3. Second Phase (2027-2035) – Applies to all ICAO Member States

Airplane operators have until May 31 in 2020 and 2021 to submit emission reports and verification reports to their State authorities. From 2022 onward, the deadline for submitting these reports advances to April 30.

  • Consider preparing for verification by performing an internal audit, then contact a third-party verification body by July of the applicable emissions reporting year.
  • The verification body performs strategic analysis and risk assessment by September of the year for which the airplane operator is reporting emissions.
  • Verification bodies use a two-stage approach to verification, with a “preliminary verification” during the actual reporting year followed by finalization of verification activities in the first months after the end of the reporting year.
