QAI, a leading organic certification organization that is part of the NSF International family of companies, can certify personal care products to the USDA National Organic Program (NOP) and to NSF/ANSI 305: Personal Care Products Containing Organic Ingredients. Products that contain at least 70 percent certified organic ingredients, but which do not meet the NOP food-focused requirements due to cosmetic industry chemical processes and production methods, can be certified to NSF/ANSI 305.

Benefits of Certification
NSF/ANSI 305: Personal Care Products Containing Organic Ingredients is the only American National Standard that defines labeling and marketing requirements for personal care products containing at least 70 percent organic content. Products included in the standard included cosmetics, rinse-off and leave-on personal care products, oral care and personal hygiene products.
NSF/ANSI 305 certification is considered a best practice by the Organic Trade Association and some retailers require it for personal care products that do not meet the National Organic Program standard for food-grade organic ingredients.
Products certified to NSF/ANSI 305 can bear the NSF "contains organic ingredients" mark as well as the QAI mark.
Why Partner with NSF/QAI?
NSF/ANSI 305 is the only American National Standard that defines labeling and marketing requirements for organic personal care products. It was developed by NSF through balanced input from industry, public health and regulatory officials and consumer representatives. The standard has the same structure, style and intent as the USDA’s National Organic Program (NOP), yet allows certified organic ingredients to be processed using certain methods and preservatives that may not be allowed in organic or “made with organic” products under the NOP. These green chemistry processes and preservatives enable manufacturers to greatly increase the product’s efficacy and expand their line of personal care products containing organic ingredients. It also allows products containing non food-grade organic ingredients to be certified.
QAI, a USDA-accredited certifying agent and part of the NSF International family of companies, is one of the nation’s leading providers or organic certification services worldwide. When you work with us to certify your organic personal care product to the NSF/ANSI 305 organic personal care standard, you gain the expertise, knowledge and logo recognition only we can provide.
Your project manager guides you through the organic certification process, which involves five basic steps, whether you produce items at the beginning, middle or the end of the supply chain.
Step 1: Application — We ask you to provide details about your organic operation that enable us to understand the scope of your operation, the procedures you follow and the products that your company processes, labels, handles and/or trades.
Step 2: Inspection — An experienced inspector conducts an on-site evaluation of your operation to verify the information on your application and assembled documentation. (An annual inspection is required to remain certified.)
Step 3: Technical Review — A technical reviewer examines all documentation associated with your operation to ensure it complies with all necessary organic regulations.
Step 4: Resolution and Notification — You’ll have an opportunity to resolve any items during the inspection and technical review that are unclear or don’t comply with the standards.
Step 5: Certification and Ongoing Compliance — Once you’ve successfully completed the process, you are certified to the applicable standard. You receive a numbered certificate and can use the NSF “contains organic ingredients” certification mark on your compliant organic products.
