“Our relentless pursuit of quality not only sets us apart, but also ensures that our customers can trust in the performance and reliability of everything that bears the Novonesis name.” Jennifer Jones, Head of Quality Operation Americas, Novonesis
The challenge
Novonesis faced challenges in gaining a comprehensive vision of its complex supply chains, which involved multiple suppliers and various packaging options. They had also been using outdated databases and tools like Excel and SharePoint, forcing them to have a lot of manual tasks and making it difficult to get reports to help with compliance.
As Aaron Horton, Head of Quality, Franklinton, NC at Novonesis explains, “Due to the complexity of our supply chain and our raw materials, we faced obstacles in being able to efficiently identify and show compliance. The internal approval of direct ingredients, using complex SharePoint workflows, proved to be time-consuming and inefficient. Furthermore, the manual processes for our raw material approvals made it difficult to conduct timely 3-year re-evaluations of raw materials and suppliers.”
The solution
To address these challenges, Novonesis implemented the NSF TraQtion® software solution to document and visually represent the complex supply chains all within one tool. This allowed Novonesis to electronically collaborate with suppliers, reducing resources and time. The approval matrix within NSF TraQtion® enabled internal stakeholders to efficiently access raw material information and make informed decisions regarding approval or rejection.
Additionally, NSF TraQtion® facilitated collaboration with suppliers to automatically request current documentation and information, ensuring compliance with FDA-FSMA and GFSI certifications. As a result, Novonesis experienced a more effective and efficient raw material maintenance landscape.
“With the implementation of the NSF TraQtion® system we have active and current dashboards that quickly show internal and external compliance,” said Horton.
The results
The implementation of NSF TraQtion® not only streamlined Novonesis' processes but also provided the opportunity to add more data fields, enabling quicker query and reporting capabilities. This allowed Novonesis to promptly provide evidence and information required during certification audits, FDA inspections and customer visits.
“By eliminating the reliance on manual emails and communications for obtaining supplier information, Novonesis experienced a significant improvement in efficiency,” said Horton. The collaboration with NSF TraQtion® was highly appreciated, he added, as it translated Novonesis' inputs and expertise into an electronic software solution configured to their specific needs.
As a testament to its success, Novonesis received positive feedback from both customers and ingredient suppliers. One primary supplier commented, “NSF TraQtion® is the best system we have worked with for document submission, information, approval, and re-evaluation." Overall, the implementation of NSF TraQtion® has significantly enhanced Novonesis' quality control and compliance processes, reflecting its unwavering dedication to excellence.
This case study showcases how Novonesis leveraged technology to overcome challenges and reinforce its commitment to delivering top-quality biosolutions across various industries.
