NSF Celebrates 50 Years of the Qualified Person, Honoring 35 Years of Industry-Leading Training

As the Senior Training Coordinator for NSF’s Qualified Person (QP) Training Programme, I’ve had the privilege of being part of an organisation that places quality and customer service at the heart of everything it does. Having worked at NSF for just over 20 years, I’ve seen firsthand how our commitment to excellence has shaped the careers of countless professionals in the pharmaceutical industry.
NSF’s QP Training Programme is more than just a series of courses—it’s a comprehensive journey that equips aspiring QPs with the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to succeed. Delivered in collaboration with the University of Strathclyde, our programme also offers postgraduate qualifications, ensuring that our delegates receive both academic and practical recognition for their efforts.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is witnessing the transformation of our delegates. Many begin their journey by attending our free QP Q&A seminars, where they can ask questions, explore eligibility requirements, and gain clarity on the path ahead. From these early steps, we support them through every stage of their development.
It’s especially fulfilling to see former trainees return to NSF later in their careers—often as mentors to the next generation of QPs. This cycle of growth and support is a testament to the strength of our community and the enduring value of our training.
I particularly enjoy meeting delegates at our in-person courses, where relationships are built that often last well beyond the classroom. And there’s nothing quite like the moment when we hear that one of our delegates has passed their viva. It’s a milestone that never loses its impact, and it reminds us why we do what we do.
At NSF, we’re proud to be part of our delegates’ professional journeys, and we remain committed to delivering training that meets the highest standards of quality and relevance. Here’s to continued success and to supporting the next generation of Qualified Persons.
Frequently asked questions
I want to be a QP, what are the requirements?
NSF offers a series of modules which have been carefully designed to meet the requirements of the UK Study Guide, which is governed by the Joint Professional Bodies (The Royal Society of Chemistry, The Society of Biology and the Pharmaceutical Society). The legal starting requirements are a first degree, or equivalent qualification, in Biology, Chemistry or Pharmacy and at least 2 years’ practical experience (1 year for Pharmacists) with the manufacture and quality control of medicinal products, on fully licensed premises within the UK/EU (fully licensed means the manufacturing site holds a full Manufacturing Authorization/License).
How does the setup with the PGDip and NSF work?
NSF, in partnership with the University of Strathclyde, offer postgraduate qualifications – simply register your interest at the time of enquiry and we will make the introduction. You must hold a science degree and attend the required number of modules with NSF.
I'm a community pharmacist. How can I become a Qualified Person (QP)?
To be eligible, you need a relevant first degree and at least one year of experience. This experience must be gained in the pharmaceutical industry, specifically at a fully licensed manufacturing facility. You can begin your QP training while gaining this experience, allowing you to work toward eligibility at the same time you complete the theory.
