What is NSF?

NSF is an independent, global services organization dedicated to improving human and planet health for more than 80 years by developing public health standards and providing world-class testing, inspection, certification, advisory services and digital solutions to the food, nutrition, water, life sciences and consumer goods industries. NSF has 40,000 clients across all continents and is a World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Center on Food Safety, Water Quality and Medical Device Safety. Learn more about NSF.

What is NSF’s mission?

At NSF, our mission is to improve human and planet health. This mission is carried out by thousands of team members worldwide, including microbiologists, toxicologists, chemists, engineers, and environmental and public health professionals.

What does NSF stand for?

NSF was founded in 1944 as the National Sanitation Foundation. Since then, we have changed our name to NSF to better reflect our current mission to improve human and planet health.

Why did NSF change its name from National Sanitation Foundation?

While we’re proud of our more than 80-year heritage, as we’ve evolved, our focus has expanded from our roots in food equipment sanitation to encompass a broader focus on global human and planet health. Our name reflects this mission, which is the heart of all we do.

What is a certification body?

A certification body usually refers to an independent, third-party organization that certifies products, services, processes or systems to ensure compliance with a specific standard or regulation. NSF is a leading global certification body.

What accreditations do you hold?

Are you connected to the National Science Foundation?

What services does NSF provide?

NSF provides a comprehensive range of services designed to support public health and safety across multiple industries. These services include auditing, certification, consulting, laboratory testing, training and education, information security, sustainability services, electrical safety and digital solutions. NSF operates within key sectors such as food and beverage, water systems, life sciences, nutrition and wellness, and transportation. By offering these services, NSF helps organizations meet regulatory requirements, improve operational performance and build trust with consumers around the world.

How does standards development work at NSF?

As a globally recognized organization for public health standards, NSF works hard to develop standards that serve the greater good and are impartial. NSF follows the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and Standards Council of Canada (SCC) standards development processes. Standards are developed by joint committees, which are balanced stakeholder groups of public health, industry and user representatives.

The NSF Public Health Council (PHC) serves as the independent, public health ratification step at the end of the process, providing final review and acceptance. PHC membership comprises only representatives from government/regulatory agencies, academia, public health, and public service; there is no industry representation.

As another check and balance on the standards development process, the NSF Health Advisory Board (HAB) establishes maximum exposure levels for unregulated chemicals that have not yet been established by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Health Canada or other authoritative health bodies. The NSF HAB includes representatives from EPA, Health Canada and the University of Michigan School of Public Health.

What are NSF’s sustainability commitments?

NSF’s formal sustainability journey began in 2023, when we committed to gathering data, setting benchmarks and identifying where we could make the biggest impact. Our sustainability strategy is focused on addressing key areas proactively using a “glocal” approach. Whether installing solar panels in Brazil or eliminating single-use plastics in Michigan, we empower teams to take ownership of sustainability while encouraging them to track and share their achievements. Read more about our latest sustainability efforts in our 2024 Annual Review and Impact Report.

What does NSF certify?

Third-party organizations such as NSF, one of the world’s most respected, independent, accredited certification organizations, independently validate claims, safety and quality. Many claims, such as “healthy,” “green” and “natural” are not federally regulated, leading to greenwashing or misperceptions of certain products. Meanwhile, people are looking more carefully at product labels and certifications more than ever before. A 2025 study from NSF noted that 83% of people read food labels before making a purchase decision. Our team of public health experts helps consumers sift through all the misinformation while using stringent standards and processes to validate claims.

Dietary supplements, functional foods, cosmetics and personal care products are sold in a market ripe for bad actors looking to prey on consumers who may struggle to evaluate misleading claims. NSF ensures products are manufactured in a safe and hygienic way and that they meet or exceed FDA standards.

What does “NSF-certified” mean?

If you see the term “NSF-certified” on a product, it likely means that the manufacturer has achieved certification from NSF and meets stringent standard requirements. An NSF certification mark may indicate that the product or operation has been certified by one of the most independent certification bodies in the world.

What is NSF Certified for Sport®?

To meet the growing demands of athletes, coaches and all those concerned about banned substances in sports supplements, cosmetics and personal care, NSF created the Certified for Sport® program. The program certifies that what is on the label is in the package and that the product does not contain unsafe levels of contaminants, prohibited substances or masking agents. Certification also means that supplement, functional food and cosmetics/personal care manufacturers and their suppliers meet stringent certification guidelines developed through a consensus process involving regulatory, sports industry and consumer groups.

The Certified for Sport® certification is the only independent third-party certification program recognized by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League, and the Canadian Football League. Certified for Sport® is also recommended by the NFL, NBA, PGA, LPGA, CCES, CPSDA, iNADO, Ironman, NASCAR, Taylor Hooton Foundation and many other organizations seeking to mitigate the risks of contaminated dietary supplements.

What is Quality Assurance International (QAI)?

Quality Assurance International (QAI) is an NSF company and a leading organic certification provider in global markets. You have likely seen the QAI logo on the back of many organic products.

What is NSF’s home products certification program?

Following an independent research study that revealed more than half of American consumers are concerned about the safety and quality of cookware and other household products, NSF established its home products and appliance certification program. Developed in 2012, this program is based on, but separate from, NSF’s commercial food equipment certification, which has been ensuring safer design and cleaning of appliances and tools used in commercial kitchens since the 1950s.

Designed to give consumers peace of mind regarding the quality, durability, and cleanability of various home products, the program covers food storage containers, cookware, bakeware, and small appliances such as coffee makers, slow cookers, and blenders. The program also includes kitchen gadgets and utensils, flatware and cutlery, personal beverage containers, corded home textiles (such as heated blankets, pads and mattress pads), fans, a space heater and many other products.

Why does NSF have its own certification for personal care products with organic ingredients?

NSF/ANSI 305: Personal Care Products Containing Organic Ingredients (NSF/ANSI 305) is one of the only consensus-based standards for the growing product category. The standard is based on the USDA’s National Organic Program (NOP) structure, style and intent. Because the NOP’s organic regulations were designed for food, it is often challenging for personal care products to be certified organic as they contain non-food ingredients and undergo complex manufacturing processes. Today, NSF/ANSI 305 is considered a best practice by the Organic Trade Association. Major retailers such as Whole Foods Market list NSF/ANSI 305 as a credible validation for personal care products.

How do I know which products are certified by NSF?

NSF labels and marks

The NSF certification mark represents that a product or operation has been certified by one of the most esteemed independent certification organizations. It is recognized, trusted and valued by consumers, manufacturers, retailers and regulatory agencies worldwide. Each NSF certification mark represents certification to the specific standard to which it applies – from dietary supplements and water filters to dishwashers, plumbing components, management systems and more.

The following labels and marks were created by NSF. Most of the marks are tied to an NSF standard or protocol.

MarkCategoriesDescription
Food, Functional Food, Dietary SupplementsQuality Assurance International (QAI), an NSF company, provides certification to national organic standards, including the USDA National Organic Program (NOP); Mexico Organics Product Law Standard (LPO); Canadian Organic Regime (COR) and Quebec Organic Reference Standards. When you see the QAI globe, you can rest assured that the product has been verified in compliance with strict national organic standards.
Food, Functional Food, Dietary SupplementsNSF’s Gluten-Free Certification assures consumers that the product does not contain gluten over the FDA’s allowable limit of 20 parts per million (ppm) and that it is manufactured in a facility that prevents cross-contamination. In fact, NSF’s certification is even more stringent with a limit of 15 parts per million.
Egg ProductsNSF Cage-Free and Free-Range Certification provides greater transparency to consumers purchasing humanely produced eggs and products made with those eggs. The protocol’s independent verification of “made with” cage-free or free-range eggs applies to multi-ingredient food products and menu items made with compliant eggs.
Food, Functional Food, Dietary Supplements, Personal Care Products and Household GoodsNSF’s Vegan Certification requires that vegan ingredients, processing aids and food contact packaging material not be derived from animals nor contain animal ingredients at any amount. NSF’s Cruelty-Free Certification requires that ingredients, processing aids and food contact packaging materials are not tested on animals.
Meat and Dairy ProductsRaised Without Antibiotics is the only independent certification that verifies the absence of antibiotics across animal foods, including meat, poultry, seafood, fish, dairy and eggs. While consumers frequently buy products with a “no antibiotics” claim, these claims are not always verified by a third party. This certification mark helps consumers make educated choices when purchasing animal products.
Food PackagingNSF’s Safe Food Packaging certification establishes rigorous requirements for the food and beverage sectors and addressing growing consumer demand for safer food packaging. When you see the certification mark on a product, you can rest assured that it has been evaluated for the elimination of chemicals of concern, such as BPA, PFAS, heavy metals or phthalates. Packaging examples include disposable bowls, boxes, cans, cartons, pouches and more.
Personal Care ProductsNSF offers certification to the only American national standard that defines labeling and marketing requirements for organic personal care products, NSF/ANSI 305: Personal Care Products Containing Organic Ingredients. The standard applies to products intended for external use on any part of the body, e.g. cosmetics, oral care products, moisturizers, lotions, soaps and bath beads. Certified products must contain a minimum organic content of 70% by weight.
Dietary SupplementsNSF Certified for Sport ensures a product is free from 290+ banned substances and contaminants and is used by athletes and high performers around the world to ensure clean sport. NSF Certified for Sport is the only independent third-party certification program recognized by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League and the Canadian Football League. Certified for Sport is also recommended by the NBA, PGA, LPGA, CCES, CPSDA, iNADO, Ironman, NASCAR, Taylor Hooton Foundation and many other organizations seeking to mitigate the risks of contaminated dietary supplements.

Personal Care ProductsPersonal care products can be certified to NSF Guideline 527, which provides testing and verification based on global testing protocols and methods for ISO, European Commission, Health Canada and US FDA criteria. NSF evaluates each formulation for ingredient acceptability, conducts formula and label claim verification and performs testing for purity, identity, contaminates and adulterants. The program ensures that personal care products intended for topical use contain ingredients accurately identified and represented on the label.
Dietary Supplements, Dietary Ingredients, Functional FoodNSF/ANSI 173 is the first and only voluntary consensus standard for the dietary supplements industry and is often referred to as the "gold standard" for supplements. Certification to NSF/ANSI 173 confirms that what's on the label matches what's in the bottle. In addition, testing is conducted to confirm that there are no unsafe levels of contaminants such as heavy metals, pesticides, known adulterants and herbicides in the product.

NSF 229 uses the same rigorous standard as NSF/ANSI 173 but applies it to functional foods and beverages, such as protein bars, hydration beverages and energy drinks. NSF assesses that the facts panel on these products accurately describes the fortified nutrient content, such as a vitamin, mineral or botanical extract. NSF also evaluates for the presence of contaminants, including toxic elements, screens for aerobic microorganisms and pathogens, analyzes for mycotoxins and tests for pesticides.
Dietary Supplements, Cosmetics, OTC DrugsNSF/ANSI 455 is a facility certification. It ensures products are manufactured in a safe and hygienic way and that they meet or exceed FDA standards. This is called Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and there are specific GMP marks for dietary supplements, cosmetics and OTC drugs.

Home ProductsNSF’s Certified for Home Use program helps give consumers peace of mind as experts test the quality, cleanability and durability of many products for home use, from dishwashers to cutting boards to coffee makers and clothing irons.
Home ProductsElectrical equipment sold in the US must be certified by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) to the appropriate standards in the National Electrical Code (NEC) based on product type. The Electrical Safety mark from NSF provides assurance that a product has been tested and certified by one of the most respected NRTLs.
WaterWhile no federal regulations exist for residential water treatment filters, purifiers and reverse osmosis systems, voluntary national standards and NSF protocols have been developed that establish minimum requirements for the safety and performance of these products to treat drinking water.

WaterWhether you have your own pool or hot tub or use a public pool, hot tub or water facility, it’s important to make sure that the right equipment is being used to treat the water as well as to prevent potential injuries. NSF’s certification program for pool, hot tub and spa components covers a wide range of products.
WaterProducts that are intended for contact with drinking water are generally reviewed under NSF/ANSI/CAN Standard 61: Drinking Water System Components. This American National Standard limits the amount of impurities that a product can potentially introduce into drinking water.
Sustainable ProductsNSF’s Environmental Claims Verifications cover anything from material efficiency to environmentally preferable content usage to environmental impact reductions. For example, NSF's third-party verification of compostable claims provides critical assurance that materials meet rigorous standards, including the absence of intentionally added PFAS.
